Hi, just checking through the witch page in the SRD and noting thier is no wording about how many spells known at first level and then number of spells learned when you level up.

I suppose just follow the wizard model?


from what I recall, it is all level-0 cantrips, and then three level-1 spells plus an additional amount of level-1 equal to your int bonus (for witches). And on level ups, I believe you get 2 spells of a level you can cast (so if you can only cast level 1, you get 2 level-1 spells. If you can cast level 2, you can get 2 level-2, 1 level-1 and 1 level-2, or 2 level-1.

It's on the SRD too, but it's hidden in the "Witch's Familiar" section between the normal Hexes and Major Hexes.

A witch’s familiar begins play storing all of the 0-level witch spells plus three 1stlevel spells of the witch’s choice. The witch also selects a number of additional 1st-level spells equal to her Intelligence modifier to store in her familiar. At each new witch level, she adds two new spells of any spell level or levels that she can cast (based on her new witch level) to her familiar. A witch can also add additional spells to her familiar through a special ritual.

hey all - this is my first time creating a witch character, and I'm building straight to lev 4 to fit into a campaign, but i'm trying to do spells known by level in order to make sure i get them all correct, but i've encountered a weird disparity - maybe i've misunderstood something...

the familiar grants all cantrips along with 3 + Stat modifier L1 spells to begin at CL 1
_my character has an insanely high number for INT, so he gets 9 L1 spells

at CL 2 the familiar grants 2 additional spells that are presently castable (can only be L1)
_now i have 11 L1 spells to chose from

at CL 3 the familiar takes a break from granting new spells until CL 4
_I just gained the ability to cast L2 spells and can't have any?

did I misunderstand something here?


scratch that last comment - somehow I read it as at lev 2 and every 2 levels after, instead of every level after, maybe my brain is tired from too much rule reading.


1. 3+stat mod 1st level spells
2. 2 1st level spells, plus 1 patron spell.
3. 2 2nd level spells.
4. 2 2nd level spells, plus 1 2nd level patron spell.

plus however many you learn from scrolls and/or other witches.


I highly recommend getting a Stone Familiar as a backup for all your spells, and manage to keep it in a safe place. If your familiar gets killed, you would normally lose most of your spells, which is why this item is great. If you can create it yourself, it's only 3k I believe. So hopefully you took Craft Wondrous Item as your 3rd level feat, so you can become the party's best friend. And are keeping up on your Spellcraft skill ranks.

Note that at level 1 you use your initial intelligence bonus. If you later raise your intelligence you don't get more spells.

BTW, how do you get 22 intelligence at level 1?
