7th level campaign entry and Item Creation Feats

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Is it imbalanced to come into a campaign where your character died using the advice '25%, 25%, 25%, 15%, 10%' rule but take some item creation feats to create Wondrous Items to save money?

are you going to be significantly more powerful than the other pcs?

does your group need the power because the gm refuses to scale encounters? only you would know if it is imbalanced

you could ask the other players if they would resent it. if they do, you could use some of the money you saved to give to them at some time, or create items that others in the group could use, or that the group as a whole need

Yes.

Wealth by level is some amount of gp. If you come in with double that, you are unbalanced. Magic item crafting is only intended to let you choose your loot, not increase it.

For example: The party finds +2 sword, then sell it for 4k and craft a +1 frost sword (costs 2k). Net gain 0gp.

On the other hand, what I usually do when I GM for item crafters is let them gain 5% or 10% bonus gold for crafting if they start above level 1. This is becuase you lost out on the usefulness of those feats since you can select your equipment anyway.

I'll refer you to the 500+ post thread of people bickering over whether or not PCs that take the crafting feat should spend all their downtime creating items for their fellow party members at cost. Seems like a lot of people are pretty maladjusted when it comes to dealing with a crafter in their party.

I would discuss, in detail, with your GM and fellow PCs what exactly they're expecting from someone with the 'crafter' label before creating that character. Seriously, consider yourself warned.

It depends on what you want to create, and how much. One of the problems with this, is it requires GM approval. It all comes down to, how much time do you actually have to craft items? If he doesn't give you a time limit, then there is nothing stopping you from crafting a wand, finding an adventurer that will buy it for full price, and repeating the process.

However, selling for full price is something any good GM would nix right away, short of a Player roleplaying it out, and even then, on a limited basis.

But, say you took all the item creation feats you could, what's stopping you from creating all the items that fall into those feats? Short of GM fiat, nothing. The problem is you could easily double your wealth by level, and this will greatly skew party balance.

Sure, you won't be doing ungodly amounts of damage in melee, but you'll be able to have a scroll for every occasion, a wand for any scenario, all the pearls of power you want, etc.

You'll quickly find yourself coming up against a sunder happy barbarian who just lurves braking wizard shinies.
