Barbarian DR Question

Rules Questions

Guarded Life-rage Power
Die Hard
Invincible barbarian DR

Invincible Barbarian DR works the following way
versus lethal DMG it is 1/2 barbarian level
Versus Nonlethal DMG is equal to the barbarian level

Guarded Life converts lethal DMG to Non Lethal DMG
Die Hard if you keep acting like normal you take 1 pt of DMG

So in theory which is why I am asking

Barbarian is beat up and drops to 0
Guarded Life Life stabilizes the Barbarian
barbarian Fights on takes 1 point of DMG
DMG is converted due to guarded life to non lethal
Since the Barbarian has DR does he bounce this DMG?

Anyone?

I'm under the impression that self inflicted damage bypasses DR am I right?

Your combo seems to work.

There's a few problems here, that I'm seeing.

1) A character with more non-lethal damage than HP immediately goes unconscious and gets knocked out. When your nonlethal damage equals your current hit points, you're staggered, and when it exceeds your current hit points, you fall unconscious.

2) Per the wording the Barbarian's DR should negate the damage from fighting while Disabled. DR negates all damage, including fall damage, so I would assume that the damage from fighting while disabled is treated the same way (since it doesn't have any special wording associated with it).

3) I don't think guarded life functions when you continue to take damage if you are already under 0HP.

In short, it should work but because of the DR, not guarded life.

That being said, I would feel uneasy about this combination as a GM.

Ah but is the damage caused your strenuous activity count as an attack?
If a dash follows the slash, then the damage reduction is effective against any attack that does not ignore damage reduction.
Focus here is Mine

You are correct, upon further investigation there is a heavy, heavy rules emphasis on DR protecting against attacks and only attacks.

PRD - Glossary - Damage Reduction wrote:

Some magic creatures have the supernatural ability to instantly heal damage from weapons or ignore blows altogether as though they were invulnerable.

The numerical part of a creature's damage reduction (or DR) is the amount of damage the creature ignores from normal attacks. Usually, a certain type of weapon can overcome this reduction (see Overcoming DR). This information is separated from the damage reduction number by a slash. For example, DR 5/magic means that a creature takes 5 less points of damage from all weapons that are not magic. If a dash follows the slash, then the damage reduction is effective against any attack that does not ignore damage reduction.

Whenever damage reduction completely negates the damage from an attack, it also negates most special effects that accompany the attack, such as injury poison, a monk's stunning, and injury-based disease. Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains. Nor does it affect poisons or diseases delivered by inhalation, ingestion, or contact.

Therefore, I'd say the damage from Fighting While Disabled would not be reduced, nor would falling damage. :)

Ok I thought this sounded a little off and with understanding I am better armed when the question comes up in game.
Thank you

Ok one more DR question
does the DR from an Adamantine Chain Shirt stack with the Barbarian's DR?
i.e. the Barbarian has DR 5/- and the Chain shirt is DR 1/- does it become 6/- or is it only the highest active at the moment?

Lets find out eh?

Here's what the Glossary says about Damage Reduction: If a creature has damage reduction from more than one source, the two forms of damage reduction do not stack. Instead, the creature gets the benefit of the best damage reduction in a given situation.

So, based on the things I have read, they would not stack together. An option if you want to have greater DR is the Improved Damage Reduction Rage Power which explicitly calls out that it stacks.

Increased Damage Reduction (Ex): The barbarian's damage reduction increases by 1/—. This increase is always active while the barbarian is raging. A barbarian can select this rage power up to three times. Its effects stack. A barbarian must be at least 8th level before selecting this rage power.

Ok then I'll need to change the Armor I bought in another game before this Friday Thanks

DR does not reduce falling damage.

Thanks for keeping up with the thread.

I don't think guarded life works the way you are thinking...

"Guarded Life (Ex): While raging, if the barbarian is reduced below 0 hit points, 1 hit point of lethal damage per barbarian level is converted to nonlethal damage. If the barbarian is at negative hit points due to lethal damage, she immediately stabilizes."

Fictional barbarian bob has 50HP Max. Bob is level 10. Bob currently only has 1 HP left, and gets hit again for 8 damage. Bob would drop to -7HP.

Guarded life takes effect, 10 of Bobs HP damage is converted to nonlethal damage. So Bob is actually at 3HP and 10 NLD. Bob now falls unconscious.

Lets pretend the attack did 20 damage instead. Bob would have dropped to -17HP. Guarded life takes effect, and Bob is at -7HP with 10NLD. Bob auto-stabilizes and is still unconscious.

In either scenario, diehard doesn't help Bob at all, because diehard does nothing for NLD > HP.
