Feats

Rules Questions

Hey all

I'm a noob and was wondering about feats.

I see you get at least one feat at creation of a toon and depending on your class race etc. you get bonus feats at different levels and such.

My question is if your toon starts out with say the basic 1 feat, do you get a new feat every level after that along with the bonus feats at the different levels or do you just get the one feat to start and thats it except for the bonus ones..

Just a noob trying to get it right

Have a great day Doug

I don't know what a "toon" is, but your character gets a feat at each odd-numbered level, inlcuding 1st.

Humans get a bonus feat at 1st level.

Fighters gain a bonus feat at 1st level and at every even-numbered level, though these feats must be Combat Feats.

Jiggy's got it right. The feats your character gains at every odd level is not a "bonus feat" -- it's just the feat you get for leveling.

At 1st level, no matter what, you get 1 feat. This can be any feat for which you meet the prerequisites. Humans get to choose another feat. Half-elves get a free Skill Focus feat. IIRC those are the only possible bonus feats you get from race.

Most other "bonus feats" you get are class features, such as the fighter's bonus combat feat or the monk's bonus feats which are taken from a list. Each class that offers bonus feats will describe what level you get those feats and which feats you can choose from.

Ha ha sorry I use "toon" instead of character I'm lazy and toon is easier to type, Old gaming days I guess..

Thanks for the info it helps a lot..

We usually use "PC" for shorthand (for player character). Since we have no rendered character on a screen to look at. :)

So... where does the term "toon" come from? I'm a bit of an etymology nerd, so I'm curious.

From toonworld.

Back to the original topic, there's a table on the first page of the "Classes" chapter of the Core Rulebook that shows character advancement, and shows that characters get one feat every odd numbered level.

As mentioned above, humans get a bonus feat at first level, and several classes get other bonus feats along the way.

Moving thread.

Great thanks again for the info, When I get home I'll have to look in the core again because I found the feat rules for creating a PC but not what happens after lvl 1.

Hmmm my wife says I have man eyes and can't see whats right in front of me, thats prolly what the problem is LOL

Thanks again

Also are style feats for monks different then regular feats? Are these taken in addition to regular feats or instead of regular feats.

The one I was looking at is snake and it doesn't do anything until I have 3 ranks in sense motive which I'm guessing means 3rd level since you can only put 1 rank equal to your level in any skill (is that right or did I misunderstand)

Anyway thanks again for everyone's responses..

"Style" is just another category of feat. You take it like you'd take any other feat.

Style feats are slightly different in that you must "activate" the style before you can apply the benefits of the style or use any feats in the Style line.

For example if you had the Boar Style feat, and Boar Ferocity feat, you'd need a swift action (which only happens on your turn, and you only get one per turn) to get in the "Boar Stance" before you got the benefit of that feat, and you'd have to be in the Boar stance in order to use Ferocity.

Generally speaking you can only have 1 style "activated" at a time. There are feats and class abilities that allow more at once.

You got it, you can only take that feat once you have fulfilled the requirement of having 3 skill ranks in sense motive, which requires you to be 3rd level. You would choose it as your 3rd level feat assuming you have all other prerequisites.

So is there a difference between a Feat and a Talent? I'm an Investigator, and can't tell if I'm supposed to get a feat and a talent, or just one or the other (as they are two different lists) when I level up to 3?

Feats and talents are different categories. You'll get one of each at level 3.

Feats are a general pool that anyone can pick from. Talents are specific investigator tricks that only investigators can take.
