In the rule for making a Monstrous PC, they effectively use the CR of the monster as the PC level. Thus a Minotaur would be a 4th level PC, a Hound Archon would be a 4th level PC also since it is CR 4.
However as a Monstrous companion it is counted as a 7th level character.
With higher CR's the companiosn seem to get short changed.
For example lets say your Fighter decides to get a "Super Horse" with his leadership. He decides he wants a 8 legged Sleipner (beastiary 3). Well if it was made as a player character it would be 11th level (CR11) yet as a Monstrous Cohort it is 16th????
Why is there such a discrepancy?

The cohort tables still include the (completely valid) "level adjustment" concept. There are benefits beyond what matters in a single straight-up combat that make some creatures more beneficial either as a PC or as a party member more generally.
LA was apparently, like the sliding-scale CR/XP tables, too hard for too many people to use, so it was dropped. Despite the fact that the theory behind it was totally valid.
