Difference Between Mine & VentureCaptain's Figurings

Rules Questions

I've re-created my first character (hand rolled and figured) in VentureCaptain, and every single detail came out identical except for weapon attack and damage. In my hand made one, greataxe is +5 and 1d12+6, and crossbow is +5 / 1d10+1. Here is a link to the VC one in Google Docs, if anyone could tell me where it is getting its figures so that I might discover where I might be missing some numbers from Core Rulebook. Much appreciated!

I have no clue your math is right you have nothing that is adding to your greataxe to hit or to your crossbows damage. (other than point blank within 30ft)

VentureCaptain is wrong, you are right. On the Crossbow, it is only 1d10+1 at point-blank range. VentureCaptain is also wrong about your base speed. It thinks your speed is 200, which is so far off the mark, it is comical. Additionally, the program does not use the "type" column for weapons correctly - it just puts the name of the base weapon in there, whereas it should be slashing, piercing or bludgeoning.

I've been feeling pretty sure that I've flipped around through CRB enough to run up on everything I'm due, but it was only a few days ago that I discovered the Favored Class Bonus to either hp or skill ranks, so I'm totally open to there being something hiding around in there somewhere!

This was my first attempt at using VentureCaptain, which I was considering trying as a hopefully easier way of making bunches of characters for my players, but I think what's happened is that I've discovered it not to be trusted.

Very much appreciated, yall!

There are more mature tools out there for character generation. If you are only using core and apg, pcgen is a free tool that does quite a bit more than just character generation, creates very pretty output (that VentureCaptain character sheet is a hot mess), has descriptions and page numbers for feats, abilities and spells, and allows you to create new content if you have house rules. HeroLab does much the same thing, except it has data for UC and UM, and it is not free.

Well, PCGen proved extremely frustrating. I think I'll just have to get good and quick at hand making.

Dark Archive

It's incorrectly adding your strength bonus to crossbow damage and adding half your strength bonus to hit with a 2 handed weapon - which you can demonstrate by adjusting your strength score.

Report it to the devs, they usually like constructive feedback and will likely fix it. It is a Beta and free so you have to expect these type of issues

What was frustrating about it? Let us know so we can make the user experience better.

One thing I noticed from the two minutes I spent recently after downloading it. . . .

It's not at all clear how to import the additional datasets you have from the site. And. . . the datasets themselves are not well-labeled.

If you are using 5.17.10 you don't need to download anything. The Out-of-Cycle Stable Datasets are just major datasets that we've worked on that are fairly easy to backport to the previous stable.

But I'll mention that we need some better info on how to install the OOC datasets.

Herolab's the way to go.
