Question about Divine Bond

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

Hello,

I've got a question about Divine Bond ability.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/paladin#TOC-Divine-Bond-Sp-

These bonuses are added to any properties the weapon already has, but duplicate abilities do not stack. If the weapon is not magical, at least a +1 enhancement bonus must be added before any other properties can be added.

If I've got for example weapon +1 and add +1 to a maximum +2, can I use those +2 to convert it for example for Holy, or do I need +3 to do that?

What you start with is what you start with, whether its non-magical or already chock full of abilities. There are two main limitations you need to be aware of - the first is that you can not change existing enhancement bonuses or properties (what the sword had before you used Divine Bond) into anything. They are what they are. The second is that you can not exceed +10 in enhancements and properties total, regardles of what the weapon had when you started... which is kind of a screw job to Paladins at high level, but we're the bomb so we'll get by.

If you have a +1 sword already you need to spend a +2 enhancement bonus to grant it the Holy property using Divine Bond. If you have a non-magical sword, you'll have to give it a +1 enhancement bonus first, THEN spend and additional +2 enhancement bonus to grant it the Holy property.

If the paladin already has a +1 longsword (say) and is 5th to 7th level they can either a) make it a +2 longsword or b) make it a +1 longsword with another +1 benefit added to it.

If they are 8th level they can make it a +3 longsword, a +2 longsword with a +1 benefit added to it, or a +1 longsword with a +2 benefit added to it. And so on and so forth. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Thank you guys for your answers. At the beginning thought wrongly about those limitations. However it's not so big deal :-)

I'll use this topic to ask about two more things.

1. Using Detect Evil as a paladin, do I need to as a character make any verbal and somantic gestures etc? Or it just works that I "feel" the evil after concentraction?
2. Question about http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/h/hero-s-defiance Hero's defiance.

I've seen a threat about it before but did not see any consensus.

Question: When lay on hands applicate? For example, if the hit will kill your character (from 3 hp to -50 let's say.), do the lay of hands will applicate?

because rule says: The instant before you are reduced to 0 or fewer hit points, you can expend a use of your lay on hands ability to heal yourself

The problem is a fact that you are.. well.. dead. On which stadium Lay on Hands is applicating?

I was curious about that, because even if the hit is fatal, you will be like a Darth Sion in this case.. Have to be killed five times on 20 lvl.. (LoH is healing full hp on 20.)
