What exactly do you do with these? I read references to "need them to buy items of certain value", but I don't know how they work. Is there a chart or something?
In addition to what's already been said, your "Fame Score" (equal to the total amount of Prestige you've earned) allows you to purchase more and more expensive items.
When you start a new character, you can only buy things that are listed as "always available" in the Guide to Organized Play, no matter how much gold you have.
If you get an item on a Chronicle sheet, you can buy that too.
To get items outside the "always available" list that you also do NOT have on a Chronicle sheet, you need a sufficient Fame score. There is a chart in the Guide detailing your spending caps for different Fame thresholds.
For instance, once you have 5 Fame, you can buy any legal item costing 500gp or less, even if it's not "always available" or on a Chronicle.

Prestige: Gets spent. It goes up and down. If your faction has already tried ressurected you twice and given you a forest of cure light wounds wands and you ask them for another favor they may say no.
Fame: I want to live forever.. and it does. Its the sum total of all the prestige you've ever earned. Your faction will always sell you the big ticket magic items of doom.
