wraithstrike hit it square on the noggin. Not all spells are created equal. If your spell list is full of crud like daze and sleep and color spray, then yeah, those end up kinda useless after a while because of the HD limit. Avoid those, or change them out. Grease never goes out of style. Neither does enlarge person. Enlarge your sword-and-board buddy and cackle when his longsword deals 2d6 and his shield spike 1d8 or more, both with reach, both with buffed Strength, plus he now probably threatens the entire room (10' size + 10' innate reach = a lot of threatened squares), which makes enemy casters sad. Even as a higher-level sorcerer, if I have to pick two spells to pre-cast before a big fight, these two are definitely on the list of possibilities (behind haste, but potentially ahead of black tentacles depending on the fight). And since they're so low-level, you could even afford to Quicken them if you have to (although this doesn't help you spend your low-level slots).

yeah, sorcerers at higher levels should have a bunch of useful lv1 spells, or metamagic them up.
Examples: Toppling Magic Missile, Quickened Vanish, Heightened Grease, Enlarge Person (Extended or otherwise), Quickened True Strike (Though most of your attacks should be touch or save, so it's kinda irrelevant), Ray of Enfeeblement/Reaching Touch of Gracelessness (absolute worst case scenario at level, it's a -3 str penalty, best case is -11), Reaching Chill touch, etc
However, strictly lv1 spells that use lv1 spell slows...I guess Ray of Enfeeblement, Magic Missile, vanish, Grease, Enlarge Person, all are pretty solid choices

I guess I just dont see the utility of a metamagiked spell (if I can make up a word). If you have an old piece of bread and a new frosted cupcake, you don't spend cash on fancy jam to spuce up the old bread, you cut your losses trow the moldy bread and eat the cupcake ! And its worst for the metamagic version of the story: the moldy bread + fancy jam denies me the cupcake !
Granted it can make a spell usefull again but then just use the spell slot for a spell at that level ! Its a better spell. Might as well use it !
Metamagic should work the other way around. You have 7 slots of level 1? Use them ! Burn 5 to metamagic the lvl1 spell into a maximised version.
Who's with me ?

There are feats and classes to make more use of your low level spells. For example arcane blast or arcane shield might be an interesting use there. Heighten your spells to get good dcs and make them pass the globes of invulnerability, or heighten your light spell to third level to cancel darkness...
Spells like protection from evil or bull's strength always remain useful. Choose your spells wisely.
A lot of the low level spells are really cool, but suffer from bad dcs if you just go with them at high levels. Heighten, toppling and other feats help you there.
Also, spontaneous casters are THE classes to benefit from metamagic. Just take another hard look at them :-)
