[Fire Mountain Games] "Way of the Wicked" is the #1 download

Product Discussion

"Way of the Wicked", the Pathfinder RPG's only evil adventure path, just hit #1 (for Call Forth Darkness) and #8 (for Knot of Thorns) for top downloads from other companies.

We've now received nine 5-star reviews and two 4-star reviews for our first two books. It's fair to say that we are overwhelmed by the response.

I want to thank everyone who purchased a download and help support "Way of the Wicked". "Way of the Wicked" continues in April with Book 3 -- Tears of the Blessed.

And if you have not yet walked the Way of the Wicked, maybe its time you did.

You've saved the world plenty.

Isn't it time the world needed saving from you?

Gary, congratulations to you and Michael both! You guys put together a stellar set of products that elegantly filled a long-desired niche in high fantasy gaming, and it's great to see that you're receiving the accolades you deserve.

Keep up the great work!

I spotted that myself a few minutes ago. Congrats, all things considered it you've definitely earned it :)

Now give me my print copy of Call Forth Darkness already! :p

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I appreciate it! More is definitely coming.

And as soon as I have a great looking proof copy, I will immediately put the print version for sale and update you personally, my friend.

You'll certainly hear from me how it goes once the campaign gets underway. We'll have to wrap up our Legacy of Fire campaign first, but we're already on the last part there.

There's a delicious irony in the fact that I was re-reading my copy of Knights of the Dinner Table #132 last night, and it included an article about why evil-themed campaigns don't work. I was chuckling as I read it, and I really hope the author is aware of this adventure path.

Alzrius,

Hey, that issue is available as free promo download here.

You know, the amazing thing is that I agree with some of what Mr. Conover has to say. What I absolutely disagree with him is that there is no remedy.

For example: "The basic flaw with adventuring with evil characters is their very nature. Evil people tend to betray and harm everyone around them. They are not concerned with the welfare of the group -- they are concerned soley with their own benefit" -- Scott Conover, KotD #132.

Mostly I agree with that. This is the way evil characters tend to be.

But must they be that way? Is there no way to remedy these anti-social tendencies and have evil characters work together enough to still have a fun gaming group?

Scott seems to believe that the problem is irreparable.

"Way of the Wicked" is my 600 page rebuttal.

Congratulations on this well-deserved honor. I'm willing to bet that the rest of the series will also hit the top ten.

Just picked both up. I'm happy with what I'm seeign so far. Funny bit about that article mentioned is I had a whole column stating pretty much the opposite.

Glad you're enjoying the books! I somehow missed your column. Very cool! I just read a few entries and it seemed packed with good advice. It is definitely a longer and more intricate exploration of how evil can be utilized in a campaign.

I've known a few players that have been interested in playing an "Evil Campaign" for years now but the usual suspects always got in the way. Mostly because one of our players had the Stupid Evil thing going on for any morally ambiguous characters he played.

This may be the springboard for that idea. I'll pick up the first adventure sometime soon and pitch it as a possible option for our next campaign.

"Stupid Evil" can be a difficult hurdle to overcome. There is a pile of advice in Book One, but in general, I think it boils down to this: explicitly tell your PCs, you are in this together. That should keep the PvP murder to a minimum.

Regardless, please let me know what you think of the book and if you do start a campaign, please tell us about it. I for one would love to hear your own version of "Way of the Wicked".

Kudos on putting together a good evil adventure path.

I think what a lot of people overlook is that Evil doesn't have to mean Selfish. Similarly, Ruthless and amoral doesn't have to mean deranged, reckless murderer. And I think the best evil personalities are the ones who think they're doing good, not intentionally being evil. Misguided intentions leading to evil actions and all that.

But I digress - nice to see something like this doing well!

Thanks for the kind words.

It has always been our intent to create a good adventure path that just happens to be about evil characters.

Almost like they masterminded this whole thing all along. Hmm...

Masterminded? Us? What ... do you think our publishing scheme is just a small part of some vast and unholy ritual?

That's ludicrous.

Ludicrous, I tell you.

wow, where did you guys come from? this is some pretty incredible material. I checked out the the free first chapter around the time Call Forth Darkness was released - and the art and format were enough to convince me to take the plunge.

Call Forth Darkness is one of the most interesting adventures I've seen in a long while. top notch, innovative, and all around jazzy. evil (not for the squeamish) but not over the top (yet?). it is expensive, but the quality and content backs it up - maybe ya'll could have a subscription?

so when is the next one going to be released?!?

Grand Lodge

I've been watching this with interest, and will probably pick it up when it is complete. How many modules will it be when complete?

Shadow Lodge

Having purchased the first two installments, I can't recommend these products and this company enough. If you're on the fence, don't be. Buy these, you will not regret that you did.

DitheringFool,

Hey, thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed "Call Forth Darkness".

Where did we come from? Well, Mike, our artist and layout guy has long slaved away in the computer game industry. I have been a freelancer in RPGs since 1999. I've worked on Earthdawn, Warhammer and now have decided to start my own Pathfinder publishing house. We met when I moved to Portland and started a "Curse of the Crimson Throne" campaign. That group still meets every Friday night. For a longer answer go here.

The next one "Tears of the Blessed" is on track to be released in April, probably very near the end of the month.

"Tears of the Blessed" is going to be...

Spoiler:

"Red Hand of Doom" where instead of defending Bristol, you raise the horde and burn Bristol the ground. Oh, and 'Bristol' happens to be the holiest place in Talingarde defended by angels.

More is on the way.

TriomegaZero,

There will be six adventures in "Way of the Wicked" by the time it is done.

"Knot of Thorns" and "Call Forth Darkness" are already out.

"Tears of the Blessed" I mentioned above.

"Of Dragons and Princesses" is out in June.

Spoiler:

This the classic save the princess, murder the dragon scenario turned on its head. Here you recruit the dragon into your cult and get the dragon to murder the princess' family. This is the adventure where you could very conceivably have a PC needing this miniature.

"The Devil My Only Master" is out in August.

Spoiler:

This is the adventure where you get whack your boss and become master of the evil organization that threatens all of Talingarde. This is the adventure where Evil gets to fight Evil.

"The Wages of Sin" is due out by Halloween.

Spoiler:

This adventure takes you all the way up to 20th level. You become the greatest villain of this generation. This is the adventure where you can very conceivably get a pit fiend servitor. The world trembles before your wake and if you are not careful, you are brought to answer for all the terrible things you have done. This adventure will have two endings ... the evil triumphant ending and the heroes victorious ending. Will Talingarde be saved or will it become a devil's playground? Herein it is decided.

So, in short...more is on the way.

I dont know if this is the place for this or not. I apologize ahead of time if it is not. I'm running the Way of the Wicked and we lost our first character. A player decided he would not swear allegiance to Cardinal Thorn and his infernal father.

So now the player has rolled up his next character. Any advice on him entering at this point? Also, how about some advice for replacement characters for the future. Judging by what I have read in 1-4, there is a good chance of losing more characters in more "traditional" ways.

Thanks

Oh! Im so rude, I posted my question and did not properly Thank the MOST AWESOME CREATIVE DARK THOUGHT PROVOKING authors/artists in the industry, Gary McBride and Michael Clarke! You guys ROCK! I have bought each issue of the Way of the Wicked and I have to say this is as good and in some ways better than most of the Paizo Adventure Paths (and I have ALL of them!). Anyway, you guys are great and due to your creative efforts and hard work, my players and I are enjoying one of the best campaigns I have ran since the Paizo version (in Dragon Mag) of Isle of Dread. I can't wait to hear what you guys have in mind next. By the way, great idea to end the Way of the Wicked for Halloween. I only wish my group could be at that point by then. NOT LIKELY, we just finished Book One; Knot of Thorns. Of course, these are so cool and being an evil adventure path. I'm sure whatever part they are at will kick-butt for a Halloween Adventure. Thanks again, guys and thank you Paizo for letting me post my thoughts to Fire Mountain Games.

Wolfknight,

First ... wow! Thanks for the kind words and your support of "Way of the Wicked". I want you to know that words of encouragement like yours mean the world to us. They truly warm our wicked little hearts.

Okay, on to business...

You just finished Book One -- so have you gotten to Farholde yet?

If so, here's my advice.

Spoiler:

In Farholde, the PCs could easily meet up with another villain who joins their cause and aids them. He could be a frontiersman, a refugee from the savage north, an escape criminal, an assassin arrived from foreign lands, a traveler fleeing a wicked past, a ...

A thousand other things.

Why this villain is aiding the knot is a question the PC must answer and I recommend posing it to them directly. If you aren't a member of the knot, you aren't a servant of Thorn or Asmodeus, then why are you a part of this campaign?

The answer should be interesting.

Anyways, hope that helps.

Game on, my friend.
