The Dark Tower (Not the book series)

Conversions

For those that have no idea what I'm talking about, look at this.

It seems pretty simple to convert to Pathfinder. I just want some fresh ideas on:

  • What can I use to replace the Brigands instead of the stereotypical orcs, bandits, etc.
  • What would be a good BBEG for the Tower itself. Preferably not the Evil Mage, Tyrant King, Dark Priest, so on and so forth.

I am just curious what zany ideas the community has to offer.

Only doing this once.

Please give some input, I would really like to see this tackled from a fresh perspective.

Somebody out there was recruiting for a Dark Tower PbP a couple months ago. You might see what they came up with.

I'm all for hobgoblins. They are way more than cannon fodder. The Slayer's Guide to hobgoblins was a great book for utilizing them to their potential.

Same for the duergar book.

Found the other thread. Thank you very much.

Oh man! My parents still have a working copy of that board game. It is still such a fun game. It's one of the ways I got my kids into RPGs in the first place. Now I'm jonesing for a Dark Tower fix.

I too still have a semi-working copy of this game. I think it is the motor that causes the cylider to cycle is damaged, so it stops turning randomly. Or never. :)

Sombody turned it into a flash game. I found and downloaded online, I'm sure it is stil out there. Same sounds, images, etc, just no plastic tower.

Some of those sounds just stay with you. That Bazaar sound? That creaking crypt sound? That tone that tells you that you are cursed or starving? Or, most of all, that sudden dragon attack sound...followed by the victory sound if you have the sword?

My brother found an unplayed Dark Tower (the pieces were still on the plastic spruces) at the dump on Nantucket back in the mid 90s. I still break it out from time to time to play with my nephew.

Never even heard of this game before. Good luck with your conversion. I assumed you were talking about The Dark Tower module by Judges Guild, which is an excellent module.

I had this as a kid. Love that old art...

You can actually play the game online, as the website (google it) creates a tower and board, and the experience is pretty much the same.

At the original poster, I think the game seeks to create the environment of the Dark Ages of earth's past history, albeit with a dragon, a wizard, and some other fantasy trimmings. I'd stick with the brigands, and make it a gritty, dark campaign setting.

Hey Fallen_Mage

In thinking about this, I envisioned the Brigands always as some variation of the Hook Horror. Their presence above ground could be explained by the fact that the BBEG in the tower has stricken the land with a sort of perpetual darkness (thus the dark tower). The link you'll see to the horrors is an independent party conversion since Paizo never put the Hook Horror into any bestiaries. Depending on the level of the party you're throwing these at you might need to scale them back a bit, especially if you're sending them at the party in groups, like the game does.

As for the BBEG in the tower, the fact that they've covered the world in this magic-made darkness, and summoned up a bunch of hook horrors to do their bidding almost necessitates some kind of a summoner or wizard that focuses on summoning. Of course you could completely break the mold and go with a twisted bard. Some sort of wickedly evil, yet entirely charismatic master of manipulation who has underlings doing all his bidding. That way you could put some low level bosses in the tower, one of them could be a summoner, one maybe a druid (for the weather magic), perhaps he's got an alchemist and a regular old fire and brimstone wizard on staff as well. This way you can make the crawl up the tower a grinding, difficult process, rife with danger. Which is always kind of how I remember the game.

Also, just wanted to say that if I were a player in this campaign, I would absolutely want to make sure that you kept in the necessity of finding the three magical keys, the dragon-bane sword, the wandering wizards (which might be better played as a warlocks, since they are handing out curses at your behest), and at least once I'd like to see a pegasus. Even if my band of heroes didn't get to ride one over the frontier, I'd still want to know that they were pretty prevalent in the campaign world. In addition you'll need to stat up an NPC Healer (cleric), and an NPC Scout (Ranger), along with some sort of new monstrous type of beast of burden (for that you could probably just use the stats for a horse or something, but for fluff say it looks like a huge hulking beast). These could be NPCs that you run, or maybe you could make sure someone in the party is filling these roles, and then just drop them in at random places.

Just my thoughts. Good luck with this. I envy your players, and now I'm thinking of throwing something like this at one of my groups.

MendedWall12 There are some interesting ideas, thanks. And thanks for the luck, I need it to help locate RL Players. I have three potentials, I just don't know if they'll be onboard until I run them through the BB.
