I don't think there's anything official. I gave my players light horses. Seems to make the most sense flavor-wise. If you're a pioneer, you probably won't be able to afford a combat-trained horse or have a reason to have one. A heavy horse could be useful for heavy hauling or work, but would be harder to feed and maintain for an overland journey.
Also, I generally interpret traits to give the least possible bang for the buck unless there's a good reason to believe otherwise.

Note that the Rich Parents trait (admittedly high-powered at low levels) gives 900 gp, which would be enough for a warhorse, masterwork gear, and masterwork barding of some sort for it. I wouldn't have a problem with a campaign trait giving someone a trained warhorse. (It's not like the horse is going to level up with them, after all.) It'll be powerful at low levels, but helping the PCs survive low level is good, and it won't matter much at high levels (unlike, say, a +1 save bonus.)
Also, if you run into multiple trolls on the random encounter tables, maybe they'll be looking for horseflesh ;)
