Power Attack Feat

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

@Paizo Staff

I have seen that the penalty you take for using Power Attack increases with the Base Attack Bonus. My question is, does having a -3 penalty (i.e. BAB=8) mean that I can take up to a -3 malus on attack rolls, or I am forced to take the entire -3 penalty each time I am using Power Attack?

Thanks

They have stated that it is all or nothing, unlike 3rd ed iterations, where you could choose to take an amount of penalty up to the max.

@extreme_tactician

You are not any more likely to get a response from paizo staff by putting @paizo staff in the subject - and since both your questions I have seen are basic questions that most experienced players can answer, it is entirely unnecessary.

Seriously, calling out developers or staff is a bad idea. Just hit the FAQ button at the top right of your post.

Thank you. I am going to do that.

I think I am going to list this just to show it to the next person that calls out Paizo to answer a question.

You're forced to use the whole amount. Which makes Power Attack terribad at higher levels when the amount of damage you're doing other than the power attack damage makes a ~25% lower chance of inflicting it at all a very poor option mathematically.

It's a shame, really. Limited in use to low levels and when not full attacking.

Tiger pounce makes power attack awesome.

That's not exactly how percentages work... If you are swinging on something at lvl 20 that has 35 ac, and you have a +40 to hit, that -6 means you take a 0% reduction to hit (rolling a 1 being auto miss)... Power attack can be extremely effective on many characters, depending on their overall to hit, and what they are fighting no matter what the level.

It also works the other way, if you have a +10 to hit and are swinging at something AC 30, you might as well power attack in the hopes of critting, because that is what you needed pre-power attack.

I did not think it was such a big deal. I would undo my actions if I could. I interacted directly with the staff for other RPGs in the past and I was just trying to do the same here. Again, apologies. Are we cool now?

We cool bro.

That's not really true if you're a fighter using your specialized weapon, a paladin using smite, a ranger against your favored enemy, or a barbarian during a rage.

Such classes have SO MUCH attack power over and above what they really need for creatures of the appropriate CR that they can easily afford to use things like Power Attack and STILL be expected to hit their targets.

I am not upset. It is just a too common thing here to call upon a dev when many of the posters know the rules almost as well.

Some posters also get upset when it is mentioned that the devs don't like being called out.

We cool. :)

In case you have not seen or looked at them before:
- Official Pathfinder FAQ
- Inofficial Pathfinder FAQ, based on collected replies of Paizo staff

Incidentally your question is answered here.

In this case: You won't find an answer to this to this question in an official FAQ since the feat description is apparently considered to be clear on that, which I second. There is no choice implied anywhere, just that you can choose to take a penalty to gain some bonus damage, and that these progress. Nowhere it is mentioned that you can choose how much of a penalty you take, thus you do not have the option.
I could imagine you have played D&D 3.5 before where PA worked very differently. Here a general piece of advice: Do not assume any of the D&D 3.5 rules with Pathfinder! Pathfinder is, though backwards compatible to a certain degree, a very different game in the end with lots of changes affecting gameplay.

Maybe this helps :-)

Yeah, no worries. We edit this kind of thing out of thread titles reasonably often. It's not usually something we call attention to but I thought it'd be better to leave a note about it since there had already been some discussion about it in the thread. It's really not a big deal. We also fix spelling and capitalization in thread titles too, as kind of a gentle nudge-by-example so the place looks nice. Kind of like, if you keep your apartment picked up it tends to stay that way, but as soon as you leave some stuff out the next thing you know you have goats and raccoons rummaging through the living room. (Or maybe that's just my apartment...)
