Planning a PBP game that could broaden a player's experence

Advice

This PBP game is about expanding one's horizons and taking what fate gives you and using it.

it'll be 20-point buy.

You pick 8 classes, 2 from each sub grouping *(Assault,Skilled,Divine,Arcane) and you can't use the same class twice if it appears in more than one group.
you pick 4 Races.

I'll randomise the selection for both.

then you pick 4 archetypes for random selection
I'll randomise it and the character's gender.

Then the player comes up with their backstory.

To make up for some of the control removed, I'll allow each player up to two feats or spells from 3PP I own or from 3.5 books (pending that I find it not broken.)

What our your thoughts on this.

*Definitions
Assault = Full BAB, or 3/4 with combat boosting abilities.
Skilled = any class with 6 or 8 skill points per level.
Divine = Any class with divine magic or can cast Cure XX Wounds
Arcane = Any class with arcane magic (Alchemists are in this list)

*Classes in each group
Assault = Alchemist, Barbarian, Bard, Cavalier, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Magus, Monk, Paladin, Ranger.
Skilled = Bard, Inquisitor, Ranger, Rogue.
Divine = Bard, Cleric, Druid, Inquisitor, Oracle, Paladin, Ranger, Witch
Arcane = Alchemist, Bard, Magus, Sorcerer, Wizard, Witch.

What type of setting?

in Golarion and using a first or 2nd level module.

assualt: Alchemist, Magus
skilled: Inquisitor, Ranger
divine: Oracle, Witch
arcane: Sorcerer, Wizard

race: dwarf, halfling, human, 1/2 orc

I'm not claiming a place or gauranteeing I would be able to play, but I'm addicted to building characters. So I figured I could do an example for your concept.

y the way, why is this thread in Advice?

So class and race are random?

yep

For feedback on the idea and to see if I need to iron anything out.

Sounds like an interesting setup. Would definitely be something that I would enjoy trying out if my schedule permits.

You mean like Ninja, Samurai, Gunslinger, Summoner?

(Though Ninja and Samurai may count as archetypes.)

Assault 2d8 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 Magus

Skilled 2d8 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7 Ranger
Divine 2d8 ⇒ (5, 7) = 12 Witch
Arcane 2d8 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7 Wizard

Ass/Skill 2d8 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10 Ranger
Div/Arc 2d8 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9 Witch

Final: 2d8 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8 Ranger

Race1:2d8 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 Invalid
Race1:2d8 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8 Halfling
Race2:2d8 ⇒ (7, 7) = 14 Invalid
Race2:2d8 ⇒ (8, 2) = 10 Human

Race: Final2d8 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6 Human

Result: Human Ranger

Now I need 4 ranger archetypes.

Sounds like fun :)

Edit: Can I ask why you used 2d8 as the die-roll?

Ninja and Samurai are classes, but due to alternate class design count in the class list like Rogue and Cavalier.

Gunslinger, and Summoner were removed for reasons
Summoner is broken in my books
Gunslinger does not fit well in Golarion in my opinion.

BTW, I saw this done another way years ago.
The GM made up random tables covering every minature he had as well as all the shelves in the store we were playing in.
Each player rolled three times on the tables, the DM removed one result, and the player picked one of the remaining figs to base the character on.
'Course, this was back in 2nd, so we added some chits with Central Casting traits, which we drew randomly as well, but were allowed to trade between players.
It made for a strange group.

Just to see what would happen

Assault = Alchemist, Monk
Skilled = Bard, Inquisitor
Divine = Oracle, Witch
Arcane = Sorcerer, Witch

Race = dwarf, gnome, halfling, human

greater chance of them not being the same result

(I used d4 before and got a lot of re-rolls)

You picked witch twice,

it can only be picked once.

Oops. Did not mean to do that.

Assault = Alchemist, Monk
Skilled = Bard, Inquisitor
Divine = Oracle, Ranger
Arcane = Sorcerer, Witch

Race = dwarf, gnome, halfling, human

Assault 2d8 ⇒ (2, 8) = 10 Monk

Skilled 2d8 ⇒ (7, 8) = 15 Inquisitor
Divine 2d8 ⇒ (8, 4) = 12 Oracle
Arcane 2d8 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 Witch

Ass/Skill 2d8 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 Invalid
Ass/Skill 2d8 ⇒ (4, 7) = 11 Inquisitor
Div/Arc 2d8 ⇒ (7, 2) = 9 Oracle

Final: 2d8 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7 Oracle

Race1:2d8 ⇒ (4, 8) = 12 gnome
Race2:2d8 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9 Human

Race: Final 2d8 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 Human

Result: Human Oracle

Now I need 4 Mysteries

Mysteries: Flame, Stone, Waves, Wind

Myst1: 2d8 ⇒ (2, 7) = 9 Stone

Myst2: 2d8 ⇒ (7, 8) = 15 Wind
MystF: 2d8 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6 wind

Gender: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5

Result: Male Human Oracle(Wind)

Seems to work well enough. 1 or 2 invalid rolls in each of the examples thus far, but that's not bad given the number of rolls you're making.

I'll put up an Official recruit thread now
the random results made will be transferred over.
