Digging and "basic" traps

Rules Questions

How long would it take to dig a simple hole in the wilderness with regular ground and a shovel? Why, if I have a shovel, would I need to pay gold to create sharpened stakes I get from tree branches to put at the bottom of a hole that I dig? Is there a minimum depth that a hole must be to be considered an effective trap? Also, if I'm setting traps in nature ala Predator with logs and snares is there a gold piece cost and again how long should it take to make and set these traps?

I just don't get the reason why a simple trap should cost 1000 gp. That seems absurd. I just started playing and for now our adventures are in the outdoors and not a structured dungeon so the idea of using natural things for the traps came up.

I appreciate any insight.

This tool lets you dig a pit at a rate of 2 cubic feet per minute.

I would say the pit needs to be about 10 feet deep. For a pit trap that is.

That's, what, 250 cubic feet? So that's about 2 hours of digging non-stop. Getting the sharpened sticks would cost a bit more. Get a shovel that casts this!

Just a dip might make it difficult terrain. You could make a small spiked trap (the same kind used in Vietnam by the VC) and try to hide that.

There'd be no gold price for using natural things. Just time and craft (trap) checks. I think you would still use the effective GP value to determine how long it would take.

Then again, maybe all this is covered.

For fun, here's the Trapper archetype for Rangers.

See this from the d20PFSRD:

From d20PFSRD:
Particularly simple traps, such as pit traps, might have a greatly reduced cost, subject to GM discretion. Such traps might cost as little as 250 gp × the trap's Challenge Rating.

If it were me, an improvised spiked pit trap would still require a Craft (trapmaking) roll, but would allow you to do it untrained. I would also allow you to do it for no cost, but max reflex DC of 15 and max depth of 10'.

I recommend you speak to your DM and work out a solution. Craft rules are notoriously bad for duplicating the creation of most items as there are too many variables to factor into an items creation than a simple mechanic can encompass.
