The DC to catch a thrown object?

Homebrew and House Rules

It's not relevant to nay game I am playing or am running, but it's something that might have some relevance down the road.

Let's say you need to get a certain item to a character but you tactically it would be better if you didn't just walk up to him/her and give them it. The recipient has a free hand, and you want to throw the object to them for them to catch it.

How would I deal with this situation?

How I'd rule it?

Standard action, attack roll of 10 to hit them (base AC, since they wont be dodging, and you're not trying to pierce armor).

Reflex save equal to your attack roll for them to catch it, or it falls at their feet. Substitute sleight of hand check instead, perhaps.

If it is in the heat of battle, probably a dex check. If nothing is going on then I would say the catch is automatic. The weight and size of the object is also a factor though.

@ Weables
The reflex save part doesn't make any sense to me because then that would mean for anyone that throws well, it makes it harder for the recipient to catch it. I feel that as you level your throw would probably get better, especially for a character like an alchemist.

If I were to make it a Dex check, how much would be appropriate for an item like a potion, like a ring, etc.?
