Any Roland "The Gunslinger" clones out there?

Silver Crusade

When I first saw the Gunslinger class I could only think of one person, Roland from the Dark Tower series so I made him as best as I could. Well I say that the other people in the party slagged me a bit but it turned out to be real fun.

Anyone else done this?

Trust me your not the only one. I thought a man with no name/ Roland char would be awesome. The only problem I can see is that these characters tend to be loners, and pathfinder is a cooperative game. I kill with my heart

When I saw the title of the thread, I thought of "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner". Come to think of it, a zombie gunslinger seeking revenge on his killer would be a pretty cool plot - especially if one of the PCs were "van Owen".

I've leaned more towards the old fashioned Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name, going with the grit feat No Name and the social trait Without A Past. Afterwords I mixed in some old more old school cow-boy movies. Typically anything John Wayne or Clint Eastwood.... Red Dead Revolver also played a roll in my character's generation.

Haven't gotten to play it yet. My GF and I quit my old play group after we learned what kind of people they were (suffice to say they are quite content to blame an innocent bystander for all of their problems, despite said person having nothing to do with what they're being blamed for). Before that the DM didn't like the way the firearm rules were handled, and promised to fix them, never did.

The Gunslinger needs an animal companion. I want to write up one with a falcon. Do any of the archetypes allow it?

I'd actually write him up as a ranger. He trains falcons. He tracks. He shoots. He doesn't bother with much if any armor.

Ranger.

I only read the first book though.

Keep reading! The first book is actually the worst in the series, IMHO... and it is pretty good. That shows how amazing the rest of the series is.

To a previous poster: Roland-type characters can certainly be part of a group of characters... like a ka-tet.

Or don't. Better to be able to still have fond memories of a decent book. You will waste months of your life only to be profoundly disappointed by one of the worst endings of all time.

To be fair, King DOES say not to go past a certain point unless you are ready to deal with the consequences after the 'end' ... unless you DID stop at that point and were still disappointed? (Can't see how that's the case, tho)

I know I had a 'wth' reaction to the ending, as well, but then I shrugged and accepted it and re-read the whole thing from top to bottom a second time!

The story ends when Stephen King tells you to stop reading. I read the rest of it, but I consider it one of many possible endings.

Yes and he rocks.

So is Roland a ranger or gunslinger?

I disiagree. While the first three books did each show a remarkable increase in quality, I think it took a STEEP dive past that, with book number four being a bit worse than 1, and the descent continuing as the series progressed.

I don't really see how you could fail to see how that could be the case. Even before the part to which you are refering...

Spoiler:
the Big Bad of the whole series was reduced from his role as an evil cosmic entity to being a mean-spirited but ultimately impotent re-animated corpse who was defeated by drawing him and then erasing him. And the Crimson King was just the final bit of villain nerfing. Flagg, Mordred, the IT expy....all of them where MASSIVELY underwhelming.

Actually most of the books he has a group with him. Before the drawing of the three, its Jake, before that, its Alain etc

I took that ending and made it my own by running a Werewolf game where the characters get essentially drawn into the story and Roland's world when the end happens (I dont wanna spoil it)
