Recruiting for Serpent's Skull (Maptools)

Yarr! Welcome to Smuggler's Shiv!

I'm interested in starting a weekly Serpent's Skull campaign and I'm looking for 4-5 shipwrecked survivors to join me on Smuggler's Shiv using MapTools & Skype (or Ventrilio or similar). Once we get our survivors together, we can discuss the night we play but it will definitely end up being Tues., Thurs., or Friday nights from approx. 8 p.m. EST to approx. 11:30 p.m. EST. As it stands, I would prefer Thursdays because I can go a play a little later if the group calls for it, but I'm somewhat flexible.

If you're interested in being shipwrecked, please respond to this thread and come up with a character concept. I'm looking for mature players. Feel free to pick any race/class from the Core rules, APG, UM or UC.

Liberty's Edge

Im down for this.

I see where you have classes listed but I'd like to inquire about some of the Super Genius Games classes such as Armiger for a tank. If not then no worries I'd still like to try my hand at being a Human Paladin or Wizard.

I only allow from the books/supplements I own. If it's Paizo, we're good. Otherwise it's a no. Sorry. I haven't really looked at third party publishers. I'm afraid I'll spend more money than I already have ;-)

Liberty's Edge

Not a problem. Lock me in for the game though. Thursday is best for me as well. I'll tell some of my online gaming friends about this. Hopefully some of them will join and bring the awesome.

I also own a ventrilo account which is a little better for voice chat that I'll happily offer up if you want.

Excellent J-Bone. We'll discuss the VOIP software options when we have a finalized group.

I'm interested. I haven't used maptools before, but I do have a skype account.
Thursday works best for me.

Dark Archive

Hey I'm a friend of J-Bone's, thinking of playing a Magus and Thursday is works for me.

Great! It looks like we have 3, and need 1-2 more and we're set to go.

If you're not familiar with MapTools, it's only the greatest thing since sliced bread! It's free and easy to use. I'm open to everyone's opinions on using macros, etc. but to date haven't used them preferring to handle recordkeeping and die rolls manually. I use a separate initiative tracker. I take great care to transfer maps to MapTools, use fog of war, etc.

So far the party consists of:

A Human Paladin or Wizard & a Magus. Adam, if you could get back to me with a character concept, we'll see how everything gels. Once we get another confirmed player, we can start getting down to brass tacks.

Lantern Lodge

I'd be down for it, I have a skype account. Not maptools though. And usually at that time my wife is watching Vampire Diaries so I'm free.

I'd play either a Half-Orc Boar Shaman Druid or a Gnome Summoner of some sorts.

I would say a cleric or a spell caster, but it seems we're a little light on the martial side. I'll see what I can come up with.

Hmm, I think I'll take a try at monk, or maybe barbarian.

Just out of curiosity, what is the point buy and all the other rules for characters, like money and traits.

Welcome aboard, DaWay!

We now have 4 players, which is a goodly number. There's still an open slot for one more, but we can run the AP with what we have now if need be.

AdamWarnock wrote:

Good question! We're going to go by the book on chargen. If you decide to use the point buy, take 15 points. As for starting wealth, take the maximum allowed for your class. When equipping your characters, equip them for a long ship's journey with provisions and necessities for a sparsely populated island.

On encumbrance and food: I like to inject realism into a campaign, but not at the sacrifice of fun and ease-of-play. We'll only be playing 4 or so hours a week so we won't be tracking what your characters eat and carry during game time. Instead, I'd like to take care of this with periodic emails during the week, if possible.

Remember, your characters are headed for an island with known dangers and not much in the way of civilization. We'll discuss more of the setting today and tomorrow here, but if you're unfamiliar with what the AP is about, I suggest you download the free Player's Guide.

Since the weekend is approaching, let's go ahead and get started with character creation and back-stories. If you decide to write a back-story for your character, you'll be awarded an additional hero point.

Here's the setup:

You booked travel aboard the Sargavan merchant ship Jenivere, which runs a trade route between the capital city of Eleder to Magnimar. Your destination is Sargava, which is one of the Jenivere's southernmost ports of call. Sargava is a slowly-growing nation recently wrested from Cheliaxian control. It promises riches to those enterprising people willing to take certain risks (and those willing to work either around or for the Free Captains, a well-known and dangerous group of pirates pulling the government's strings).

You may have boarded and paid for the trip from the capital nation of Eleder or one of Jenivere's many other ports of call. If you need a map of the area or ideas on where your PC might have originated or joined up with the Jenivere and her crew, please contact me. The journey from Eleder to Sargava takes approximately one hundred days.

Aside from your party, there are six or seven other voyagers on the Jenivere who share your destination in addition to the captain and his crew. I will introduce you to these other characters prior to our first session by email.

Speaking of email, when your characters are finished or if you have any questions, shoot me one at 3.5demigod AT gmail DOT com.

Any questions, let me know!

Liberty's Edge

I am seriously interested. I don't have maptools, but willing to pick it up and I use to have a vent account years ago for WoW so know how to use it.

Really want to play an Alchemist. I can either play it as a support role or even tank role depending on how the character makeup of the group finallizes.

This is TClifford again. The character I am looking at is based on this character I had that almost made it into another campaign. I will have to tweak him because I think this is a 20 point by. But I can do that easily.

With TClifford, we have 5 and I'll put a hold on recruiting for now. Welcome aboard the Jenivere, TClifford.

We have:

Paladin or Wizard (I'd recommend the Paladin)
Magus
Monk or Barbarian
Druid or Summoner (either works for this party, I think)
Alchemist

This has the makings of a well-built party.

I gave my email above, so get back to me with your character sheets and don't forget those back-stories if you want the extra hero point. I highly recommend downloading the free Player's Guide through this website and reading it.

If we get any additional interest, we'll create a waiting list.

Lantern Lodge

Just making sure that it is 15 point buy, 2 traits, max hp to start, and max gold ?

Since it's mainly divine we are with I will shoot you an email with a couple character concepts after I get home.

DaWay wrote:

Yes to all of the above. It's recommended you choose at least one campaign trait from the Player's Guide.

Dark Archive

after looking at the party makeup I think I will go with an Vanara Rogue Named Riki-Oh

Sorry to say this, but I think I'm going to need to drop out. I think my course load may get to heavy for me to keep up with this one, so rather than have to drop out later, I'll just free up a spot now.

Thanks for considering me. If you decide to run another one later in the year, I'll definitely be looking forward to it.

I would be interested in being on the waiting list, currently wanting to try the Samurai Sword Saint Archetype, however I can play most anything.

*bump*

AdamWarnock has dropped out and H.P. Makelovecraft (love the name) is now welcomed aboard the Jenivere.

I have only had a couple of players email me and submit their character concepts/sheets. Again, my email addy is 3.5demigod AT gmail DOT com.

Okay, I've updated my character for a 15pt buy. Made it simple and just dropped the DEX and INT to 16. Looks like we have enough front line fighters so I'll concentrate on support so I'll drop the Mutegen from my Extra Arcana for Tanglefoot Bomb.

Lantern Lodge

I have a friend I might be able to convince to join

Now do I get lazy and make edits to my Samurai I applied to a different game with, or do I go with something else...

Liberty's Edge

Paladin sent

I don't want to be 'that guy' but goblin gunslinger, yay or nay?

H.P. Makelovecraft wrote:

As a GM, I'm not opposed to interesting racial choices or kits. In the end, its how the party would respond to a goblin gunslinger that will either make it work or fail. You're free to make your case as to why a goblin gunslinger would work with this party to the other players and its up to them to consider how their players might respond to such a party member.

My character is a bit of an outcast...as long as he can pull his weight, I don't care.

Currently the concept is that he is a pirate out of Shackles who got on the wrong boat, so currently he thinks the crew and players are bloodthirsty pirates..he also doesn't understand nautical terms and will often misuse them.

Lantern Lodge

rough draft of background:
Kyr doesn’t know much about his background. He just remembers getting in trouble a lot at the orphanage up until the day he snuck out and never returned. Living as a street rat for a couple of years, stealing what he needed to survive and allowing himself to be caught on those really cold nights, better to serve time in a jail than freeze to death on the street. When things got too much to handle he would just leave never to look back. Unfortunately he got used to running, and rather quickly. This is all great until you get caught running, or stowing away. Which Kyr was, and he was accosted and left in the ruins near Kaer Maga.
Kyr interrupted something that should have been left untouched. When he was running from the caravan guards he feel into a summoning circle as the closing chants were made. And then he felt, it. It consumed him and changed him. It made him into a beast. The beast was a creature that walked on two legs with long and gangly limbs, no mouth, comprised of solid shadow. It was almost as if the form was malleable and could be crafted and evolve into something more.
The beast slew all those that would do Kyr harm and then left. Kyr knew that the beast would come when called and join with him. He knew the beast name too, Whisper. Upon Whisper leaving him he was left in the carnage that he created. So he journeyed and ended up in Magnimar, but not alone this time. Whisper was always there in the back of his mind. He got to know Whispers personality too. He was cold and calculating, and loved to observe people. He was the polar opposite of Kyr. Kyr was charming and sociable. Kyr was more likely to win you over with a smile and some charm where Whisper would rather rip your throat out.
In Magnimar he found work, not necessarily honest work but it was work nonetheless. He boarded as a shiphand on the sailing vessel the Jenivere and has been there for the past couple months getting to know crew and passengers alike.

What are everyone's feelings on beginning the campaign this Thursday night?

I'm still waiting on emailed character sheets from Cyric Dayn and H.P. Makelovecraft (even if you have your character sheets here, please also email them to me so I have a paper trail and your email addresses).

If everyone is up for starting the campaign this Thursday, what is everyone's preferred method of VOIP? Several have offered the use of their Vent server. Skype is another option. I prefer Ventrilio, but I'll leave it up to the group.

For those of you not familiar with MapTools, I will email you the basic information you'll need to know (but first I need everyone's email addresses).

So we have two votes:

1) Is everyone prepared to begin play this Thursday at 8 p.m. EST? Yeah or Nay?

2) What is your preferred method of VOIP? Ventrilio? Skype? Something else?

Liberty's Edge

Im down with this Thursday and prefer vent.

Thursday and vent are good for me also. And I'll send over my character sheet when I get home today.

Lantern Lodge

Thursday and I already have skype

I already sent my sheet to you, and I have vent and skype so either works for me.

H.P. Makelovecraft wrote:

I just noticed this was in my Spam. Sorry about that!

It looks like the majority have and use Vent, so we'll be going with Ventrilio. J-Bone, you have a Vent server and you're willing to let us use it for our game nights?

Lantern Lodge

Does vent cost money? Can someone provide a link to download the software?

DaWay wrote:

No, the Ventrilio client does not cost money. Here's a link to the download:

http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

I'm putting together a longish email for all players that will go out tomorrow that contains information about Maptools and a background on the campaign. Expect to get this tomorrow. It looks like we're on for Thursday!

Liberty's Edge

We can absolutely use my vent server

Ok, I lied. The email was sent today.

Lantern Lodge

I don't have experience with maptool or vent so you will have to bear with me as I get over the learning curve.

Guys, I hate to do this, but I probably will not be able to make it tomorrow. My wife and I are trying to get pregnant and using aritificial insemination and she reminded me late last night that today and tomorrow are basically the days in which we will know it if took.

So, I am either going to be jumping for joy tomorrow or I am going to be trying my best to keep my wife's hopes up as we try again.

Sorry.

Cyric Dayn wrote:

Now that gave me a chuckle. I have DMed a lot of games but that has to be the first time I ever got a cancellation like that! In all seriousness, my wife and I went down the same road you're going down now. After much trial and tribulation, we ended up with boy/girl twins. I'm sure the two of you will succeed.

Now that we're down one player, I'll leave it up to the group as if we play as scheduled. But I see no problem bringing you in after 1 missed week.

Lantern Lodge

I know the feeling my wife is 5 months pregnant now. Anyways I hope it's jumping for joy tomorrow.

But in all seriousness I'd be down for gaming tomorrow albeit one down.

Thanks for the support guys. Still no good news or bad news as of yesterday. Today's still a big day. Wish us luck and we can always say I was being antisocial in my cabin :)

Liberty's Edge

Good luck on that Cyric!

Im down for tonight, (Thursday)

We're on for tonight and might have added one additional player bringing the party count to 6. That's a pretty big party to manage, but I'm sure we'll make due.

You should have all received an email from me with your MapTools login info. If you didn't, hit me up and I'll re-send it to you. T-Bone, we'll need the Vent login info.

We're good to go! See you all tonight.

I hope everything went well. Things didn't go so good around my household and we have to try again next mth.

Cyric Dayn wrote:

I'm sorry to hear that. All you can do is keep trying. Stay positive!

As for last night, the session was abruptly ended by a power failure on my end. We had a lot of icing from sleet during the afternoon and I guess a power line went out.

We played for about an hour. Other than an encounter on the beach, we didn't get very far. I had planned on dealing Cyric in as a marooned passenger from another ship due to your absence, but because we didn't really get the campaign off the ground, I think we'll bluebook the fact that Cyric was with the rest of the passengers the entire time.
