Dark PDF issue with AP#52 only on iDevices

Website Feedback

Title says it all.
In both GoodReader and iBooks, Forest of Shadows artwork and color appears very dark. Even the names at the bottom of some of the pics in the PDF are almost blacked out.
I've tried to redownload the file a few times, still the same issue. All the other PDFs are fine (including 51 and 53 the previous volume and the one after).

This is the way it shows up in iTunes by the way which is way, way darker than it looks on the iPad or iPhone.

On the iDevices its readable, just darker than normal artwork and pages.

Yes, I also have this problem on my iPad 2 with iBooks.

The appearance of the Jade Regent pdfs has been fluctuating a lot when I would expect that they have been created following the same workflow, but that's obviously not the case, which is a shame, because every other AP just doesn't look nice.

Just had time to go through the new AP #53 more thoroughly. No issues except the name tags on the pictures. Artwork looks good and has the proper gamma, the names on the portraits are still almost blacked out.

This has been talked about before, but I couldn't find an answer to the problem then. However, I've gone back and done a test with just the cover and viewing it on iBooks and I think I might be able to do something that should fix the darkness problem.

The workflow and export process hasn't changed at all. However, a new person is doing them (hey, it's me!), and with that switch has come a few minor issues that I've been working to fix as soon as they come up. To put it simply: PDFs aren't simple and Apple products in particular have a multitude of different fiddly bits when it comes to rendering them properly. If there's any issues or errors you come across, please let me know.

Have the names been blacked out throughout the entirety of Jade Regent? I noticed this in iBooks also, and suspect it has to do with the style we apply to the text.

I'll see what I can do about getting Forest of Shadows updated sometime this week. :)

I can't check, but for me, the Brinewall Legacy looked ok in Good Reader, but for the other parts (don't know really about Night of Frozen Shadow, but the other two I am sure) the pictures were kinda dark and the name plates almost unreadable.

Appreciate it Chris. :)

First two Jade Regent volumes are perfect, from volume 3 starts the blacked out text issue. Volume 4 alone is the only one with the darkened artwork as well as the blackened text. These issues are the same on the iPhone and ipad2.

I have had a problem with the entirety of the Jade Regent path PDFs (the 4 published so far)on my desktop iMac using the Preview software.

If I try to resize the image, nothing happens except the spinning beachball of death hangs there interminably like Groetus above the Boneyard and I have to force close the software. It also happens if I try to copy any of the PDF (I use Apple TV to display images of NPCs and Monsters etc. during play).

It happens with each of Jade Regent PDFs, but none of the Adventure Path PDFs I've previously downloaded, or other PDF products I've bought from Paizo. It's just Jade Regent. Which is a shame because that's the campaign I'm running right now. Boo!

Are you using Lion? Because Preview on Lion has a known issue with Paizo's pdf. The fact that it would still work with some pdfs puzzles me, though.

That helps narrow this down. There has to be some sort of kink in the InDesign file causing at least some of these problems. I'll see what I can do.

This sounds like an issue with Preview itself. As Olwen pointed out, the update to Lion seems to be causing the issue.

Nu-uh. I'm still on OSX(10.4.11). If it was an issue with the software why would it only affect the Jade Regent PDFs and nothing else? Bestiary 3 PDF is fine, Dragon Empires PDF is fine - they were both published after the start of Jade Regent, and everything I bought previous to Jade Regent has been fine too. It's just the JR AP issues.

This is something I really don't have an answer to. Also, going back, I see that you posted about this problem before, but not in a place we usually look for issues. In the future, please either post to Website Feedback or shoot me an email. I suspect it may be that Preview on the older OS just doesn't like something in the PDF. As you can see above, there may be something going on with the native file we do the PDF export from. This is particularly difficult to pinpoint because those native files have a lot of moving parts. In the meantime, I highly suggest trying out a different PDF reader. Preview has its own set of rendering problems that pop up every once in a while.

I'm a big Mac fan, and usually love Apple's own apps especially, but Preview is frankly pretty lousy at displaying PDFs. Every single version has had display issues with some PDFs, and I just plain don't trust it to display what it should.

OK OK, I dloaded Adobe Reader and it seems fine so far. Of course I'll let you know if that changes. :P

Any news about updated PDFs, Chris? You mentioned trying something with the darkened artwork.
Thanks in advance. :)

Yes! This is going to get updated this week. Sorry, got distracted by some other things on the To-Do List, but this will be happening.

Frog God Games

On iProducts I suggest viewing the files with the new Adobe Reader Aps that are available. They read absolutely fine that way. Goodreader (my reader of choice on iProducts) does not always render PDFs properly for some reason and it drives me mad as much as it does Chris, I'm sure.

Finally got around to downloading the last Jade Regent installment. lighting in the pics is ok, blacked out nameplates are here as well. :(

I noticed that as well. The nameplates actually aren't blacked out (if you zoom in, you can see the dark red text), it's just the white image that we put behind the text is mysteriously just not showing up in Preview or iBooks. I'm going to be going in and fixing this and the previous volumes that show the error (should be up tomorrow afternoon).

EDIT: I'm partially done with this, and will have this up next Tuesday.

Thanks Chris! Hungry Storm nameplates are fixed with the updated PDF! Ill be watching for the next few volumes to be updated.
Thanks so much btw. :)

I've updated up to #53 (I'll have #54 tomorrow), but I'm not sure if the email notifications were sent (you should get them tomorrow, most likely).

52 and 53 also fully fixed (dark pics in 52 fixed too). Awesome job. :)
Ill pick up 54 when you update it. :)

edit* only got the email for 51, no biggie. I'll check back tomorrow anyway.

You're welcome! This was a particularly silly thing causing it, but now that I know what to look for, there shouldn't be issues like this again :)

Thanks Chris, it does look much nicer. :)

all JR books fixx0red.

Good Work Chris! :)

As Sunderstone indicated, all of the Jade Regent volumes are now fixed (the email for #54 should be getting sent out shortly).
