I would say so. It is set up to slowly introduce new players into the Pathfinder system, trimming down the 500+ Core into less than 70 pages, full of vibrant pictures and simple explanations. The introductory crawl would be perfect for your son, especially since it comes with pregenerated characters. You could play an NPC as well and just go through the introductory scenario, which helps introduce new concepts as you travel further into the delve.
I would highly recommend this route before getting into PFS, which will need a minimum of 4 people (GM (who plays a pregen) + 3 other players). And luckily there is a way to transition between Beginner Box and PFS already set up once you feel he is ready to transition to Organized Play!

This is something else I wouldn't mind having- adventures for a single player (and they don't have to be sanctioned for PFS organized play!) would be a great thing... my fiance is currently running a fourth level character solo through the first part of Legacy of Fire when it's just the two of us, and I have been adjusting as I go (as needed).

Expeditious Retreat Press writes 1 on 1 adventures for Pathfinder: http://paizo.com/store/downloads/expeditiousRetreatPress/1On1AdventuresPFRP G (Make sure you get the ones in the Pathfinder section, not the 3.5/OGL section)
I have the One on One Adventures Compendium. I just finished DMing the first adventure in the book, which was for a level 3 rogue. It was well designed and lots of fun.
Coolest of all, I felt like it really took advantage of the 1 on 1 format, especially with the rogue character. Lots of sneaking and mystery solving that would be impractical in most 4-person parties.
The adventures are for specific classes, and have a level range. i.e. "Barbarian or Ranger levels 5-7" Each adventure supplies an optional regenerated character, or you can make your own character of the appropriate level.
I have the beginner box as well, and I don't think you need it. The great thing about the beginner box is that you can sit down and get 4 people who've never played an RPG before adventuring in like 5 minutes using the pre made characters. (The pre made character sheets have awesome little explanations about what all your abilities do). 1 on 1 it's a lot easier to teach someone the full game.
In your situation I'd definitely recommend Expeditious Retreat's 1 on 1 adventures over the beginner box.
