Bards and performance in combat

Rules Questions

I´m about to play my first bard, which i will post later eventually.

Its a 2 level Lore Warden rest bard 18+1d4 point buy controler bard using a whip with greater trip and combat reflexes.

I´m still thinking about using an archetype, but loosing versatile performance isn´t really what i want. Where we hit the spot.

Does bardic performance in combat need a performance check or something?
Some people argue that if you use performance string you would need to hold an instrument in order to perform?
Let´s say i use comedy as first versatile performance, so i get the most out of dazzling display. Then i take sing or whatever as next.
Do i need to use that skill to perform in combat?

There was some discussion about taking a somatic and a sound thing (maybe i confuse the names) to always be able to perform, even silenced.
Seriously, imagining my bard making a pantomime to give out inspire whatever is ridicuous somehow.

Any way i think its not necessary to take this stuff as versatile performance. The only confirmation i found so far is this sentence under Skill: Perform

Special

A bard must have ranks in specific Perform categories to use some of his Bardic Performance abilities.

That means i could just put one rank in another performance to use that if silenced or whatever.
Any other confirmations?

Generally no, the only performances that require perform checks are countersong and Distraction

See above, most performances do not require a check

You don't have to use the perform skill at all unless the performance calls for a skill check(countersong/distraction)

From the rules "Each bardic performance has audible components, visual components, or both." You can have performances that are purely visual in nature like dancing.

Since no perform check is required for most bardic performances, you don't technically have to put a point in anything to use the ability while silenced.

Thanks^^

You do not need an instrument in hand to perform, except for possibly Distraction / Countersong.

If you do decide to use an instrument to start a performance, for whatever fluff reason you desire since there's no need to by the rules and as intended, you do not need to keep on using it to keep the performance going. It's magical, yo. You start it, and the magic just happens.

All Perform skills are untrained, so even if you did need to use them (which you don't.), you could use any you wanted.

Addendum: While this statement is true, it is worth nothing that a masterwork instrument will give you a +2 on countersong/distractions checks.

In addition to that, a masterwork Organ will provide at least cover, if not total cover.

Lol ... gotta love a bard that travels with his own organ / shield.
