The best way to approach writing fictional stuff under the C.U.P. is to just use the world and characters that Paizo has written as a backdrop. Insert YOUR stuff into that setting...just don't mess with the setting and its major players itself.
As for rules stuff, well, that's much easier. That's an established ruleset that you HAVE to work with when applying modifications or alterations.

I have a question about copyright/community use. If we take something out of one of the products (say Karzaug from RotRL) and develop it into a submission, how much trouble does it cause?
So, referring to Karzoug is OK. Perhaps you are statting up some minion of his, or a prestige/alt class based on him. Good.
Altering Karzoug is not "descriptively referencing" him. So, altering his stat block, embellishing on his backstory, history, or making an alternate history, putting him in a story about his early teens, etc. That's not OK. It's messing with canon. And that violates Wayfinder's Guidelines.
It's worth reminding that the adventure portions of Rise of the Runelords are going to be republished in an updated form later this year.
If your idea consists of taking NPCs or monsters from those adventures, and updating them to PF rules, or even rewriting them as a different class entirely (eg from the APG, UM or UC), then it's safe to say the official writers have already got a head start on you. And their version will always be official.
Where you could have a much more free hand, is to read the supporting articles, and instead concentrate on retooling the building blocks that got used to make such an NPC.
Eg; don't mess with canon, to retrofit that named Captain of the Hellknights from CotCT into a Cavalier. Add a variant Hellknight prestige class, whose progression more synergistically benefits Cavaliers.
It's then up to each individual reader, whether they want to include such material in their game, and whether they want to perform an unofficial retrofit on that specific named Hellknight.

Tim, is there any plan to include new magic items?
I accept if they may all get bundled together, rather than being individual articles in their own right.
I will always accept new magic items. Usually people write up a 750 or 1500 word article that includes two or more items in a theme of sorts, so I've never really needed to combine articles together to make a "magic item super article", like we do with the bestiary.
However, that'd be really cool if we DID get enough magic items submitted to us to merit such an approach.

That was an off-the-cuff comment in reply to a query over altering exisiting NPCs, but it does make me wonder, how many of the organisations and prestige classes in the 3.5 material have either been superceded by the new classes, prestige classes and archetypes, and more to the point, how many of those organisations could do with a facelift, to allow for the existence of, or to give better synchronicity with, the newer material.

Has there been any decision made as to the format of the articles, insofar as a statement which product they expand upon?
I.E. in the header or footer banner or space, "For use with Module D1: Crown of the Kobold King "?
Or a line from the author, "I decided to add to 'Module D1: Crown of the Kobold King', because I have kept lizards for ten years, and have a deep love for all things kobold.".

I haven't really made any decisions yet, but yes, it will most likely be right up front in the article as a heading or first line of italicized text.
It would be helpful if you, as the author, mention which Paizo product served as your inspiration. I mean, I would figure it out...eventually. But, if you could save me the time.... ;-)

OK. This is what we have decided on how Chroniclers and Wayfinder are going to work together...
The bigger articles (3000-word) are going to be coming from the Chroniclers, or a guest author. The 750- and 1500-word pieces can come from everywhere, and will be edited by the Wayfinder editor team.
So, if you've got a 4 page story in the works, run it through the Chroniclers. If you've got a 1 or 2 page story, go ahead and submit it directly to Wayfinder!
Any questions on that? (We opted to make it simple!)

Thanks! I am a big fan of simple.
And a first line of italicized text? Hmm, one article was inspired by mentions of rune magic throughout RofRL and Ultimate Magic { but not year one :( } and the other by my super nifty Harrow Deck that I got with the CofCT bundle.

Is the intent to still produce a print version, for giveaway at the Con, with a larger pdf version for download?
I had an idea for a minigame, based on the Chase Cards mechanic, but to do it justice, it would probably require 1 page of text and 3 pages of cards. Too much for the print edition?
Given the 'cut out and play' nature, it's something that would work far better in pdf form in any case.

That is the intent, still...yes.
Your idea is definitely destined for the PDF version of #7, should you do it.

Working on it today, in fact. Almost done...Just need to let it rest, mull it over and then send it in.

Hmm...as much as I love getting my work into Wayfinder, the "Must go through PF Chronicler" thing means I probably won't make it into this one. I love PF Chronicler, and it's a great resource, but with everything else I have to juggle I haven't had the sort of time necessary to devote to things over there (it's hard enough finding time to edit my -own- work, let alone the work of others). Maybe in the future, but...meh. Not my favorite new requirement.

Dane, you did look up a couple posts to the revised requirement, yes?
If not, I've saved you the trouble....look below:

Wow. So apparently I'm blind, lol. Thank you for reposting that. That's good to hear (and anything I wanted to submit that's longer than 1500 words I'd -want- to send through chronicler anyway).
I'm considering chopping up my Eyes of the Beast into another serialized story, so I'll send something soon! Thank you so much for clearing that up. :)

I've been discussing with JesmondCat some ideas for articles, and he, being an old John Blanche/GW fan, thinks he'd like to try his hand at some 'Chaos Warrior'-style Hellknight art, and maybe even include a horse(!).
Which is very welcome news, since I'm the one bought him a horse mannequin several birthdays ago...

I have a short story that takes place in Korvosa, but it is 2000 words. I plan on hacking off the last 500 words of it (which is specific to the CoTCT game I played and wouldn't really work unless people knew things my group knew.)
Would that go through Chroniclers or Wayfinder?
Send that to Wayfinder. (750 or 1500 word stories go to us)

Thanks for everyone's submissions thus far!
So far, we have around 12 submissions. That is about one-quarter of the number we need. Each issue usually gets/accepts 40 articles, with a good number of those being monsters (750 words each) for the bestiary.
I'm pretty confident that there are at least 28 people out there that have an idea, a monster, a group of magic items, some spells, a side trek, a class/archetype....something....that they are writing up and polishing for submission.
Just remember, you have TWENTY DAYS LEFT. March 31, 2012. 11:59 Pacific.

Am working on two, one weal or woe set in Falcons Hollow for Kobold King and one side quest for Curse of the Crimson Throne.

I sent off a 750 worder a week ago. Let me know if you didn't get it and I'll resend it.

I'll probably leave the fanfic to others; had considered a weal/woe but looks like the folks above are jumping on it; are there any vastly underrepresented columns/regular features that you lack submissions for, in comparison?

We are looking pretty good on fiction pieces. Pathfinder Chroniclers tells me I have 3-4 3000 word stories coming my way for consideration, too.
I'm not saying I won't consider more fiction...no, no, no. We don't have much in the way of 750-word short stories, so we could use some of those.
I'm saying that if you want to choose to do fiction OR do a monster, OR a Weal Or Woe, OR a nice Side Trek, OR come up with a new class/archetype, well, I am a little short on those.
Actually, I only have 2 monsters for the bestiary, and NO Weal or Woes. No new prestige classes. No Archetypes. So...yeah.
So, don't worry about what others are doing...because I don't have their article in my hand yet. I need whatever YOU are inspired to write, OK?
So (Daviot, I'm looking at you), WRITE a Weal or Woe if you want to!
And creatures! Let's fill up the Bestiary again!

I would also LOVE to continue what Neil started, and offer another mini-adventure based on a Weal or Woe article. What happened for Wayfinder #6 was that I received a fun WorW, with an accompanying short story intro. It was so well set up, I declared to the community that I wished someone would step up and volunteer to write the mini-adventure for it. Larry Wilhelm, who has written up several PFS scenarios, did just that.
So, in an ideal world, we'll get someone to put forth a great Weal or Woe article based on one of the Year One products...that begs to be developed further. And then we'll get a freelancer fan to step in and write up a mini-adventure for it.
Consider that a Special Call. Let's make this happen!

Well, having not heard of Wayfarer until you just mentioned something about it in the Superstar forum, I'm now going to spend some time obsessively checking out back issues. I don't know if I'll have time to submit something for this issue (especially since early Pathfinder/Paizo is definitely not my forte), but I'm fairly excited about the opportunity in the future. And if inspiration strikes, well, I've got a few more weeks, I guess. Weal or Woes definitely sound like something up my alley as a gamer...

Timitius wrote:I would also LOVE to continue what Neil started, and offer another mini-adventure based on a Weal or Woe article....Consider that a Special Call. Let's make this happen!I'm on it! Again...
Ha! Nice! I don't have a Weal or Woe this time, but I may try to get a monster ready for this issue. We will have to see how my time shapes up....

![]() |

I am almost finished with my Weal or Woe, but if someone submits a better one then mine I won't be hurt.
If I do my own Weal or Woe, should I also submit a mini-adventure or will you ask someone to write it based on what I did? (provided mine is chosen.)
I'll wait until I get everything in, after March 31. Then I look at the candidates, and decide if one of them shouts "ADVENTURE!" Then I look for a writer (usually one who has some freelancing experience) to agree to work out a 4500 word adventure piece.
EDIT: Looks like my flattery won Neil over! :D

![]() |

Timitius, do you need more monsters?
Wayfinder can always use more monsters! We won't be able to use them all, but having a good pile of them helps fill out the Bestiary with style.
I'm seeing a lot of high level creatures, though. Seriously, we need a good variety of CRs. And keep in mind that I'd like them to be inspired by a Year One product. If you can place your beastie in a module or AP, flavorwise, then do it (and let us know what product, too, OK?)
