Advanced technology along with the craftsmanship involved in making one. It probably takes a while to make them as well.

Silver Crusade

The problem that makes most quality optics cost a great deal of money is that a lot of lenses must be rejected due to flaws. That is one reason why high quality photography lenses cost so much. The reject rate is high because small flaws invalidate the whole lens.

Its a great way to get characters to spend 1000 gold for an item that does virtually nothing by game mechanics..

There is no real economy to D20 its just made up numbers that someone thinks it makes sense..

You could make the spy glass cost anything you like as a GM and it still would not affect game balance in any way what so ever.

So enjoy.

The Exchange

There's an old joke that in the game spyglasses are the best way to carry vast amounts of wealth at minimum weight...

I get that, but I mean.. why in the first place? Other things take more effort to make, and spyglasses are kind of completely worthless 90% of the time.

and a magnifying glass requires an equal level of craftsmanship, and only costs 100.

Silver Crusade

Shut up! That's why!

Secret conspiracy.

Well if you take a level 5 guy, you will likely have a +2 int, so total craft bonus is +10. Average result is a 20 and assuming that it takes a DC 20 to make. Then it will take 2.5 weeks to make. So quite a well indeed.
