Greetings everyone.
Now as I'm reading the first bestiary it is noted that Archons all start off as Lanterns or lesser servitor spirits and gain power and prestige through aiding the cause of good. Also with angels it is a similar process with deva's and planetars sometimes being promoted to solar.
Now with the Azata's is does not state on if like Archons they all start as a basic form and move up or if they prehaps become a certain type right off the bat. How do Azata's progress and grow in power is what I'm curious about. Do they get stronger through the act of good like archons or do they just grow in power like mortals do, learning from experience and training themselves both physically and spiritally?

Short Answer: it works like you want it to.
Longer Answer: I've not seen a developer or designer make a specific statement. Until then, it works like you want it too. After that... it works like you want it too. Unless you're playing in Golarion and James Jacobs lets you know how it works there, in which case it works like James says. Unless you don't want it to, in which case it works like you want it to. To sum up: it works like you want it too!
(I'd totally default that it works the same way as other celestials, but with more random tendencies toward sudden "promotions" as opposed to ordered rewards... although certain entities grant those rewards as well.)

I'd say azatas could be a reflection of demons; demons tend to be created based on the mortal (sloth, rage, lust, etc.), so I suppose what azata you'd become would depend on the life you led. There wouldn't really be a 'promotion', unless a more powerful creature willed it (like an empyreal lord).
