Ranged "bolt" attack of monster - where can I find the range?

Rules Questions

Hey everyone,

last night i had a "witchfire" attack my players.

it states a ranged (touch?) attack. I could no where find the range of this attack?

i treated it like a "ray" with 25ft + cl.

Linked. That sounds about right.

My first thought at the word "bolt" was that it might be like Fire Bolt and other first level cleric domain attacks, which have a 30 foot maximum range (no range penalties to be able to fire farther).

It's odd that this isn't specifically stated, though. I could see going with your "ray" interpretation, too.

I thought about that, too, but it's a more powerful attack, more in line with scorching ray or something like that. I'd guess it would be a "close" ray, if they'd bothered to list the range. It seems like something the monster would use a lot. The SLAs like fire bolt are wimpy, and don't see much use at higher levels. This is something that works pretty well for the level.

It would be a touch attack, since the Witchfire is incorporeal. All incorporeal attacks ignore armor, natural armor, and shield bonuses (except force effects).

Edit: I'd probably go with 60 ft range in my campaigns.
