What size should each square be to make it Paizo/WotC compatable with existing products - if possible use centimeters but if thats not possible because its in inches rather than Cms then let me know.

Typically speaking, most battlemaps are designed in 1 inch shapes, with 5ft of movement = 1 inch. This, of course, can be modified to fit your group.

Do you want to do a map with hexes (as per subject) or with squares (as you say in the text)?

Squares are 1 inch I believe (2.54 cm), no idea about hexes.

If you are making hexes I suggest slightly larger than 1 inch so that a 1 inch diameter circle can fit totally in the hex. This prevents standard mini bases from slightly edging into neighboring hexes.

Not a big problem normally but when minis are clustered together it can start to be an issue.

Oops - I meant squares... late night typing and all

Same advice the area of the square should be exactly 1 inch between the lines used to delineate them. i.e. The lines do not count as part of the width or height.
