Help me create a Pathfinder Dog breed book?

Homebrew and House Rules

Silver Crusade

Okay, I am going to undertake a big underataking.

A book of dog breeds, as many as I can find and make stats for, for Pathfinder. Now you can have a Aristrocrat with a Butterfly Dog. Or a ranger with a wolfhound. However, to do this, I am going to need your help.

People of the Paizo messageboards, post here what dogs you want added, with a link to the breed information and I will do my best to make a Pathfinder Dog Breed book a reality.

^_^

Well, by "book" I more mean a collection of stats that I may whine at my boyfriend or someone else to put into a PDF thingy... since I can't make PDFs.

What I have already

Papillon- Butterfly dog

Planning

Catahoula Cur- Needs a name not connected to earth, I am considering Leopard Swampwalker Cur
German Shepered- Alsatian (once again, can't mention germany for a place where germany doesn't Exisit)
Borasia
Poodle- Standard, Minature and Toy
French Bulldog- Galtian Bulldog

This is just a short list of course, but please, suggest your favourite dogs.

Are you talking about submitting alternate versions of dog or riding dog stats?

Elven Soother (alternate dog)
Senses: change Perception +5
Abilities: -2 Str, -2 Con, +6 Cha
Feats: Skill Focus(diplomacy)
Skills: Diplomacy +5 (+9 change attitude), Sense Motive +5
Racial Modifiers: +4 Diplomacy to change attitudes , +4 Sense Motive

Bred more for looks than strength, this breed suffers from poorer health
than normal dogs. They are then trained from a young age to read body language and appease others.

Liberty's Edge

I would love to see something like Mouse from the Dresden Files. Although calling him a dog may not be the most accurate description. Mouse is a Caucasian Ovecharka Mountain dog if you want to believe the Dresden wiki.

Grand Lodge

Just to save a little time, there is a product for pathfinder from 4 Winds Fantasy Gaming called Phantasia Zoologica Volume I: Cats, Dogs & Horses (PFRPG) That has many breeds already included. Just a suggestion.

You know how dog breeds are split into groups? Like the working group, the toy group, the sporting group, etc? You might try that. The groups do tend to have some traits unique to those groups. The toy group are all size tiny, the sporting group has higher con, the working group has a higher str, things like that?

It might make statting the breed easier if each group had a template.

I don't mean to be... uh... mean... but what's the point of statting hundreds of creatures that in the end will differ only for a +2 here rather than there?

I don't know. Maybe you can make a variant of the Mouseguard game. Call it....Dogfinder.

Mouse is not a Caucasian, he can dance

Role Play reasons.

Just continuing the question, but why would stats matter too much then?

That's a good start, but really not comprehensive enough.

This.

In game mechanics, the difference between a pug and a dachshund will be minimal (or none). Same with the rottweiler and greater swiss mountain dog.

Just make a general entry, then a list of names of breeds and give them each a small bonus (like +2 acrobatics, or swimming, or +5 feet of movement).

Here's a start at a Boingle (beagle/pointer mix) for you -- based on my own dog, but with breed info here for another take:

Boingle (variant of "dog, common")

This creature's compact form belies an enormous howl, with speed and teeth to make the threat seem credible. It would also seem to be an excellent guard dog, emphasis on "seem": at times it will unleash its howl at "intruders" that no one else in the area can find any sign of--usually during watches in the middle of the night--but at other times it is able to sleep soundly through the most heated combat. Its temperament is rivaled for foulness only by its smell.

Senses: Perception +10 / -10 (alternates)
Abilities: +2 Con, -2 Wis
Skills: -5 Diplomacy
Feats: Eat anything (see pg. 37)

special abilities: frightful howl (ex): the boingle can use its frightful howl once per round; any creature of 1 HD or less within 30 ft. must succeed at a DC 15 Will save or suffer the effects of a cause fear spell. Any creature that successfully saves is immune to the boingle's frightful howl for 1 day.

I'd prefer to keep to pedigrees and not crossbreeds.

Good call. If the game doesn't allow half-elves and half-orcs, no need to start tinkering with half-retrievers and half-dachshunds.

I think that the "dog group template" approach is a really good one to start with. Even if you have your heart set on making a per-breed encyclopedia later, having templates for the first set of stat changes can speed the process up later in development. If you included it in your encyclopedia (maybe in the appendix or something), it could help the people who want to make mixed-breeds you don't want to do yourself.

Breeds I really want to see: Mastiffs, Bulldogs, Pointers, Labs and Pugs. I don't really feel the need to go into sub-varieties much, but that gives something of a spread of purpose dogs with what should be wildly different attributes.

As a response to those who wonder why per-breed descriptions might be for roleplaying- it doesn't take a die-hard roll-player with actuarial tendencies to want to change the numbers to reflect your roleplaying experience. Rather than free-form it all the time or just slap the "young" template on the riding dog, I might want to make my snuffling, asthmatic Pug shift some of his Con into wrinkly cuteness.

I was going to mention this as well. It's quite well done and includes most common breeds as well as some fantasy specials. The original was for dogs only, then they upgraded the PDF to do the same for cats and horses. And gave it to people who had bought the original for no additional cost. A quality product and a quality act.

Now, back to (online) shopping...

Okay, any breed of Mastiff or shall I do them all?

Same goes for Bulldogs?

I'm nearly finished a Galtian Bulldog (French Bulldog in our world)... I still need to come up for a name for the British Bulldog

After I do this, I'm gonna hit wikipedia and do each group alphabetically. (using the AKC, CKC, Kennel Club and breed club standards)

Probably pick your favorite. For most games I've been picking dog breeds for inspiration by purpose- for guarding palaces, Mastiffs are a dog of choice, while criminal elements might use Bulldogs for guarding things (they're smaller, fight ferociously despite greivous wounds, and if they're not needed anymore might be used to gamble with by the more heartless of underworld owners, which is great for making people hate a villain). Ranger-types would make excellent use of labs and pointers, and the most rich of wizards or Arcane bloodline sorcerers might show it off with a Pug familiar.

Well, I'm still on toy breeds, haven't even gotten to the pug yet.

I'm now on the Tianese Crested. Once I have the toy section done, I'll post it here for you lot to pick at and suggest changes before I PDF it.

What I've gotten so far for the doggies of Pathfinder

spoiled for size:
Dogs of Pathfinder

Toy Dogs.

Monkey Dog
A little black wirehaired dog eyes you with a mischievous look, then he begins to bark his head of. Apparently, this is his turf
Type: Animal
Size: Tiny
13 Str, 18 Dex, 16 Con, 2 int, 8 wisdom 18 Cha

Monkey Dogs are hardy, spirited and engaging companions, however they are stubborn and very hard to train. A Monkey dog will only do something on his good time, not before, and then often not after, if he doesn’t really feel like it.
Language: Monkey Dogs cannot speak, however they can learn commands in any language, including nonsense words, hand signals, and whistle tones.
Skills: Acrobatics (Jump), Swim, Intimidate, Climb
Racial Abilities
Scent: A creature with the scent ability can detect opponents by sense of smell, generally within 30 feet. If the opponent is upwind, the range is 60 feet. If it is downwind, the range is 15 feet. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at three times these ranges.
Note: A dog is a dog is a dog. As such they will often delight in strong scents, and may attempt to track them down to roll in them. This especially pertains to things that are rotting.

Tenacity: Monkey dogs will not back down from a fight, no matter how badly they are injured. They can fight, even if their HP drops below zero, and will continue to fight until death.

Ratter: Gains a +3 attack on all vermin
Terriers in all but name, these little dogs live to hunt and kill vermin. They are very quick to challenge authority. However they do make engaging companions, and can be quite comical to watch. These dogs are quite good at getting into trouble, and are notorious climbers and scrappers. They will defend anything they see as theirs, no matter how big the aggressor is. They will also take what they want, once again, size is no object to them. The coat is coarse and black. Their face is monkeylike.
Butterfly Dog
This small perk-eared spaniel’s eyes are bright as it watches you, it gives a few barks then runs off. It seems to want you to follow
Type: animal

Size: Tiny

Stats: 8 Str, 18 Dex, 8 Con, 8 int, 18 Cha

Butterfly Dogs are small and not very strong, they can be a bit fragile. However they are highly athletic and very agile. They are also highly charming. They are very clever dogs and pick up training and tricks with ease.

Language: Though Butterfly Dogs cannot speak; they can be trained to understand any language that their master speaks. They will not obey commands in a language they do not know. They also understand whistles and hand signals.

Skills: Acrobatics (Jump), Swim, Stealth

Racial Abilities

Scent: A creature with the scent ability can detect opponents by sense of smell, generally within 30 feet. If the opponent is upwind, the range is 60 feet. If it is downwind, the range is 15 feet. Note: A dog is a dog is a dog. As such they will often delight in strong scents, and may attempt to track them down to roll in them. This especially pertains to things that are rotting.

Beg: A creature with beg ability uses its innate cuteness to convince other beings to either feed it or pay attention to it. Creatures may throw a will save against begging. This ability works as adoration.
Butterfly Dog- This toy dog is popular among the upper classes. It’s a small athletic animal that is descended from spaniel stock. Butterfly Dogs are active and very clever. They are also known for managing to get into many sorts of mischief. With their sweet natures and boundless energy, it’s easy to see with these bright little dogs are very popular companions.
The majority of the coat is white, however the ears and face always bear a mask; there are also markings on the rest of the body. The Butterfly Dog takes its name from its ears, which stand up erect and, combined with the facial markings, look like a butterfly’s wings. There is also a breed with lop ears that is referred to as a “Moth Dog”.

Bichon Frise

A cute, button nosed fluffy white dog sits up on her haunches and wags her tail at you. Then she rolls over and wiggles about, begging for a belly rub.

Type: Animal

Size: Tiny

Stats: 4 Str, 9 Dex, 8 Con, 2 int, 2 wis 26 Cha

Skills: Acrobatics, Swim

Bichon dogs are cute and somewhat agile. However they are prone to skin ailments, and really aren’t that clever, in fact the border on abysmally stupid. Their stupidity isn’t a factor, however they are good at looking cute, and that’s their job. They serve as lap dogs

Bichon Frise dogs are white and fluffy. Their coat is curly and their low-slung build can best be described as tank-like. These fluffy white dogs are surprisingly heavy for their size.
Though not clever in the least, Bichons are trainable and generally really like to please their masters. Because of this they are commonly found in troupes of performers.
Bichon dogs are companions, and this trait leads them to get along well with any other animal. They are highly friendly, and are more likely to roll over and ask for a belly rub than to guard the camp. If confronted with danger, they’re quite likely to hide behind their owner. Despite this, they still can make good watchdogs, since like any small dog they are prone to barking when they hear odd noises. This makes them one of the popular breeds to keep an ear out for goblins.

Boxwood Terrier
The small terrier barks and wags his whole body at you. Brindle and white, with a somewhat short muzzle and perked ears, there is something endearing about him.

Type: Animal

Size: Tiny

Stats: 8 Str, 15 Dex, 6 Con, 8 int 10 wis 20 Cha
Boxwood Terriers need to be with people and their small size makes them agile. However their short faces adversely affect their breathing.

Beg: A creature with beg ability uses its innate cuteness to convince other beings to either feed it or pay attention to it. Creatures may throw a will save against begging. This ability works as adoration.

Boxwoods are fully companion dogs and enjoy every moment of being such. They are happy to go wherever their masters go. These dogs have a short face that is free of wrinkles, erect ears and a short tail. They are well shaped and have straight legs. The most common colour is either black and white or brindle and white. However other colours do occur.

They are bright and cheerful dogs, often called happy-go-lucky. They are not known to be very vocal. In fact, they are quite sensible towards barking.

Being companion dogs, they get along with almost everyone. A Boxwood will come to accept pretty much anyone if they are properly socialized.

Royal Cavalier Spaniel
A small short faced spaniel lounges at the feet of the noble. The black and tan dog seems unconcerned for anything other than what his next meal will be.

Type: Animal

Size: Tiny

Stats: 2 str, 8 dex, 2 con, 5 int, 6 wis, 15 cha

Skills: Acrobatics (jump), Swim
Royal Cavaliers are slow and steady and their mellow personalities make then highly charming. However they tend to have health problems from overbreeding. These dogs are only suited to being a lapdog of a noble, or perhaps serving as a familiar to a wizard.

Beg: A creature with beg ability uses its innate cuteness to convince other beings to either feed it or pay attention to it. Creatures may throw a will save against begging. This ability works as adoration.

Royal Cavaliers are laid back dogs. They really have little concern for anything but what’s for dinner next. Their short faces causes some health problems. These dogs come in four colour types, Blenheim, Tricolour, Black and Tan, and Ruby.
These sweet dogs are good with children and are highly affectionate. However they are not dogs to bring out into sporting or combat. They are most comfortable at the feet of a noble, or as a beloved pampered pet.

Gnome Dog
A tiny dog looks at you, then begins barking very loudly in an attempted bravado.

Type: Animal

Size: Diminutive

Stats: 1 Str, 24 Dex, 1 Con, 4 int, 10 wis 10 cha

Gnome Dogs are very fragile and small. However they are also extremely agile and good at getting along with others.

Skills: Acrobatics (jump), Swim
Abilities

Scent: A creature with the scent ability can detect opponents by sense of smell, generally within 30 feet. If the opponent is upwind, the range is 60 feet. If it is downwind, the range is 15 feet. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at three times these ranges.
Note: A dog is a dog is a dog. As such they will often delight in strong scents, and may attempt to track them down to roll in them. This especially pertains to things that are rotting.

Beg: A creature with beg ability uses its innate cuteness to convince other beings to either feed it or pay attention to it. Creatures may throw a will save against begging. This ability works as adoration.

Bravado: You act bigger than you are, and sometimes you pull it off. In an intimidate check if a 17-20 is rolled, you can add +1 your intimidate score.

Barker: This dog barks a lot, and as such when it is around you gain a +7 perception check on hidden small animals and goblins.

Gnome dogs may be the smallest breed of dog known. However they don’t seem to think so. A gnome dog will bark loudly at any threat, real or perceived. These dogs are easily recognized by large bat like ears and big eyes. They rarely grow larger than six pounds, and even smaller is the favoured size. These tiny dogs have little to do with gnomes, however have been named such due to their size compared to other canines.

It's slow going, but I'm going slow but steady.
Anyone willing to help?
Please?
I'm begging you!

Special abilities:
Tough looking coward(ex) The typical Boxer can be quite intimidating when threatened, even sometimes when it's not threatened, and such gains a +5 to intimidation checks. This bonus can be negated with a DC 10 Knowledge(nature) or DC 10 Profession (dog breeder) to realize that the bark is much, much, much worse than the bite. Also any boxer will not fight to the death unless the boxer is protecting its litter, or fleeing is not an option. Unless protecting its litter the boxer will flee
Hard to train(ex) Teaching any boxer any trick with handle animal incurs a +5 to the DC. While boxers aren't stupid, they are easily distracted making teaching them anything more difficult.

Known as the jokers of the dog world boxers are tend to live a rather short (8-10 years) life, but a happy life it is, just the sight of their owner is enough to get the tail wagging even years after arthritis has set in. Despite the vicious appearance of a boxer they make terrible guard dogs. Most boxer dogs are kept as pets.

well i figured id ask

Frog God Games

A book of such things in it already exists for Pathfinder from 4 Winds Gaming.

Phantasia Zoologica

Frog God Games

That said, they didn't cover EVERY breed with their book, so there are still spaces to fill. But they did develop a great system specifically for breeds of dog, cat and horse and a system for these animals being familiars.

This was pointed out upthread too. I believe the OP thought it was not comprehensive enough although I find it quite sufficient myself.

Hard to Train (ex): Despite being very eager to please, Bishions are still extremely stupid. Any attempt to train them takes a +5 to the DC check.

They can be used as a familiar, but their low intelligence, even for an animal, makes it hard.

Bellis Terriers are fully companion dogs and enjoy every moment of being such.

A Bellis Terrier will come to accept pretty much anyone if they are properly socialized. These small, charming and social dogs make popular familiars among the middle class. This well mannered little dog is often referred to as the Andoran Gentleman of dogs.

Royal Cavaliers are slow and steady and their mellow personalities make then highly charming. However they tend to have health problems from overbreeding. These dogs are only suited to being a lapdog of a noble, or perhaps serving as a familiar to a wizard who spends the majority of his time about research.

Chihuahuas may be the smallest breed of dog known. However they don’t seem to have any concept of their small size. Chihuahuas will bark loudly at any threat, real or perceived. These dogs are easily recognized by large bat like ears and big eyes. They rarely grow larger than six pounds, and even smaller is the favored size. These tiny dogs are great for familiars, as they can be easily carried about in a pocket, even by the smaller races. There have been stories of other diminutive races using these dogs as mounts.
