It is my understanding that a player race character with PC-class levels is CR = Level-1.

So a 5th level gnome barbarian ought to be CR4.

Normal restrictions apply, such as having way too much loot for your level.

Typically, at least in several Paizo adventures, a character with PC-level wealth instead of NPC-wealth gets a +1 increase to their CR. So a 5th level actual PC would be CR5 rather than CR4.

A PC's CR is calculated similar to an NPC (number of class levels -1), but since PCs have outstanding gear, favored classes, and better stats than most NPCs, their CR should be equal to their number of class levels.

It may also be fair to check your stats against those on the recomended values by CR chart that exists for building monsters, to make sure you're not overoptimized. I've had builds that clock in several CR's above on that chart where you'd expect them based on CR = Class Level -1 or CR = Class Level with Player wealth.
