The troll could still attack in the 5-10 foot range with its bite and one claw, of course, without dropping its weapon - but then, trolls are not notorious for their cleverness.
*Most* trolls are not notorious for their cleverness.
Besides, I don't think it has to do with cleverness so much as training.
Random trolls you find in a cave, maybe not. Special war-trolls in the employ of an enemy army? That's a different matter entirely.

Since you guys are on the subject of reach weapons, can anyone clarify how can a medium sized humanoid with a reach weapon gets an AOO from someone clsing on him/her? by the time the creature provokes the AoO has left the 10 feet zne and is in the 5 ft zone when it provokes, or is it just between the ranges XD, that has always confused me

The same way someone cops an AoO when he leaves a square adjacent to a longsword-wielding human. The AoO is triggered by leaving a threatened square, and is dealt as the person is leaving the threatened square, not after he has left it.

When someone is closing on someone with a reach weapon, they provoke when they leave the weapon's threatened area, typically going from 10' away (threatened) to 5' away (non-threatened).
Remember not to nerf the reach weapon user by not allowing them their AoO on someone going through their diagonals, going from 15' to 5' away still crosses through the threatened 10' area, it is just that the grid doesn't handle diagonals well.
And AoO occurs when they leave the threatened area, whether they are approaching or retreating, so it occurs while they are still in the (nominal) 10' away area.
Then again, thanks to a couple of new feats in UC, there is a weapon which can take AoOs within an even larger area, since it is a 15' reach weapon which can be used adjacent, the whip, and the Whip Mastery feats cause it to not provoke anymore, and, with the 5th level feat, take AoOs with it. Add an Enlarge Person effect, and combat maneuvers (trip/disarm, for example) and it just gets more sick.

You could say that from there it just gets trippy.
