How to retrain feats?

Advice

Dark Archive

Hi there, sadly due to something that has happened in the story of the campaign I play in, my half orc fighter 8/barbarian 1 (I was going to take more of barbarian) has had his main weapon destroyed (a minor artifact great axe) destroyed and now has a new weapon (minor artifact hammer). The annoying thing is that I have weapon focus, specialization and improved critical all for great axe. As the God I know follow (Thor, its a Nordic game) weapon is a hammer, I feel I should use the new weapon.

My question is, other than the retraining feats from the Fighter class (which I, if I go for all my other levels in fighter, will only be able to retrain 2 feats) is there any way to retrain feats... Spells, Items, anything else... Is there a way you may suggest I could request some role play way of retraining a feat? My DM doesn't like my character much as I rolled well on my stats, is the only original character in a 1 1/2 year game (ie minor christmas tree effect) and so is fairly powerful and a level higher than the other characters (just got a level and not sure if to go fighter or barbarian). In the changing my god to Thor, I have lost alot and already been nerfed a bit but I feel this is another big blow.

If you can help at all, please do.

Many thanks in advance

Wish spell and a nice GM?

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Lately my DMs have been allowing one choice retrained every level up, ala 4e. It works pretty well for us. That's houseruled in though, I know of no RAW.

Heh. Yeah I'd probably let a wish going a fair way toward feat retraining. And if we are throwing around numerous minor artifacts I am not so sure a wish (or miracle which might be more expected based on the divine nature of this change) is unreasonable.

The WotC, Players Handbook 2 (3.5version) had rules for retaining options that you might slide past your GM.

As a GM, I generally allow someone who wants to give up a feat to go a full level without using it, then he can swap it for another feat that would have been legal for him to pick up at the same time as the feat he's given up when he levels the next time. This is generally done because they find it less useful (often closer to useless or unusable) than they imagined.

I am not so sure I'd be happy about someone dumping an entire chain of feats that they'd been using heavily over their adventuring. But I probably would not be planting many party usable artifacts in front of my party (unless of course they were tailor made for the party).

Retraining (as presented in the 3.5 Player's Handbook II) is the ideal solution.

Barring that, if you can get your DM to allow you to find a psion (or find a Wizard who has researched a spell with an identical effect) then Psychic Reformation (4th level psion power, see the SRD for details) is the next best solution.

Barring THAT, a Miracle should do, especially considering this is your God's favored weapon. Find a cleric of Thor of sufficient level (or bring a Scroll of Miracle to a Cleric of Thor) and request that he replace your mastery of the greataxe with that of the Hammer. (And hope your DM will be nice-ish. Getting an 8th level spell cast isn't cheap, buying the scroll is downright expensive.)

My group has always allowed retraining weapon-specific feats only if there is a decent amount of time in-game to represent training time with your new weapon, and you are only switching those feats over to a weapon that is in the same Fighter's Weapon Group. So we would have no problem with switching your axe-specific feats to your hammer, but you couldn't switch, say, Improved Trip to Point-Blank Shot because you decided to switch from a halberd to a bow.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to me that an experienced fighter would be able to adjust his fighting style to a similar weapon.
