Best shapes for a "vanilla" druid

Advice

I searched thread, but couldnt quite find what I was looking for.

For a standard PHB druid what are the best shapes for

1)Combat
2)Utility
3) Other

I'm low level now, so I only have Beast shape I. So I'm specifically looking for that please, but if you want to give the best shape for higher levels that'd be much appreciated.

Wolf, Bear. Once you get to 8 Large Cat / Bear

For utility / playing keepaway, usually a bird of some sort. Other can vary, from snakes getting into small squeezes to dolphins.

1) Prob bear is one of the best. Although the wolf to flank trip can be good depending upon the rest of the players' needs.
2) Horse, birds, snakes, fish, and dogs can all make great scout/spy
3) Various monkey/apes can allow you to climb and still open doors/windows and carry small things

1)Combat

Velociraptor. Scent, pounce, nasty natural attacks, FIVE natural attacks and a ton of attacks. Medium size lets you maneuver in dungeons.

2)Utility

Bat. Blindsense is awesome, especially since you have farie fire. You can also hide in really small cracks, and blend into the population.

3) Other

Badger: for digging escape tunnels or getting yourself out of a landfil

Horse: Traveling from point A to point B? Hand the fighter a lance and have him ride you. An X2 charge with a lance will mess up anyone's day.

Where is the velociraptor listed? I looked under dino in MM1 and MM2

He's referring to Deinonychus. And it only has 4 natural attacks (the animal companion version has 5 because it splits the "foreclaws" into 2 attacks). Still a good one, though big cat is better IMO since it gets free grapple.

If you're going to be in urban areas a lot, I would say wolf and small bird; both blend in comparatively well, and still provide a good punch, either in combat ability or the ability to fly.

Great, the druid has to turn into a discount dino

Also don't forget that the Deinonychus has a 60 foot movement, which can come in handy if you want to move and search
