Pearl of Power for spontaneous casters?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi, I read in another somewhat older thread that there is an item that does this. They called it a rune of power but I am unable to find a source book for this item. Could someone cite the book it came from (if it exists at all)?

Shadow Lodge

While I can't help you find the rune, I can tell you that there is a similar item in the Draconomicon. It's a 3.5 book.

Grand Lodge

There was one in 3.5, but I have not seen one in PF. The SRD doesn't show anything for rune of power.

I think it's in Pathfinder Society Field Guide. I was somewhat curious why it's twice as expensive as a standard pearl of power though, since it's more limited based on the more limited spells known a spontaneous caster has, and the smaller percentage increase in spells per day they get since they have more to start with than a prepared caster.

I've found the item, it appears on page 53 of the Society Field Guide. They allow a spontaneous caster to cast another spell of the proper level.

I can speculate that they are more expensive because they are in most ways MORE flexible (IMO) than Pearls of Power. A Pearl allows you to recover a spell you've already cast, making the selection very finite, you only get to repeat a spell. This is useful, but not as useful as another spell off a modest (sorc/bard) spell list.

If we compare them to a ring of wizardry in cost you find a sliding scale of effectiveness, based on your class. 1st level spells are better off with the Runes since you can craft 10 of them for the price of a Ring of Wizardry 1. At 2 they lose cost effectiveness once you exceed 5 2nd level spells on your class list but until then they are a great buy. At third AND fourth level they lose cost effectiveness to the Ring of Wizardry 3/4 respectively once you can cast a fourth spell of those level.

All in all they're still cost effective to make and use, but eventually lose out (except level 1's which will always be better than a ring). If you have Craft Wondrous Item there is no reason NOT to make them as a saving plan for a ring of wizardry (By cashing them in for the same price you crafted them at). I know my Bard is loaded with excellent 2nd level spells, so many that I might do this. I probably wouldn't buy them at market price though.

Looks like those items also don't require a separate action to use. A pearl of power requires a standard action to activate. These are activated as part of the spell casting.
