One thing that still continues to confuse me about the game is the idea of masterworking. I get that you pay the extra 300 you get a +1 to hit and a +1 to dmg. From there you can enchant it to make it amazing.
However I keep seeing things popping up like the +2 great-sword and such. Now I am making an assumption here that you can increase the potency of the great-sword with extra money (without making it too magical), ie. a +2 great-sword would do +2 to hit and +2 dmg. so on if you pay more +4 to both ... and so on.
Much like the composite bow, pay for the +4str and get a bow that works with the +4 to dmg.
However I get all excited and look in the books for the rules and costs to get a +2 greatsword! The only description I can find is the paragraph concerning the pay 300 get the +1.
I am fairly sure they exist, what are the rules on the though?

Pay 300 for Masterwork and you get +1 to hit
Then pay another 3k and it becomes a +1 to damage as well
Add another 6k and it becomes +2 to hit and +2 to damage etc
A bit less. A +1 magic weapon costs 2000 + 300 MW + base cost of weapon. A +2 magic weapon costs 8000 + 300 MW + base cost of weapon, or if you already have a +1 weapon it's an additional 600g (8000-2000=6000).
In order to figure out how much the magic part costs, the formula is (bonus^2)*2000. So a +1 weapon costs (1^2)*2000, or 2000g. A +2 weapon costs (2^2)*2000, or 8000g.
The rules on how much magic weapons and armor cost are not in the equipment section but in the magic item section, at the back of the Core Rulebook.
Remember that MW is only +1 to hit, not damage. Making it +1 magic gives you +1 to hit and damage. The MW and the magic bonuses don't stack though, since they're both enhancement bonuses. The only way to get +2 to hit is to make your weapon +2, which will also make your damage +2!
