Varisian Dancer Magus!

Homebrew and House Rules

Hi!

I'm going to be starting a RotRL campaign and the DM is really open to playing with the rules (We aren't geniuses out to destroy the system). I wanted to try out a Scarf-wielding Magus. We're even playing with having the "metal bits" be a broken down Blackblade that was incorporated into the scarf (It changes color based on its mood :D)

I think the Dervish Dancing would be great if it worked for scarves, however the "Piercing" portion doesn't really fit the nature of the weapon. Would it be gamebreaking to say something like this:

Varisian Dance:
Prerequisites: Dexterity 13, Weapon Finesse, Perform (dance) 2 ranks, proficient with bladed scarf.

Benefit: When wielding a bladed scarf with one or two hands, you can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on melee attack and damage rolls. You can also treat the bladed scarf as a one-handed slashing weapon with a range of 5' for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a magus' spell combat ability). The bladed scarf must be for a creature of your size. You cannot use this feat if you are carrying a weapon or shield in your off hand.

Grossly overpowered? If so, what could be done to balance it? Give it the same "attack penalty" progression as the pole-arm fighter's "short haft" ability? I don't want to overpower the other characters but I enjoy the concept enough to work with it. Help?

tl:dr I want to change the Dervish Dancing to Varisian scarf dancing with a shortened 5' one handed reach.

I love the idea of a potentially deadly scarf-dancing Varisian. Unfortunately I have no idea how over/under-powered your re-skinning Dervish Dancing would be. The only thing I would say is you are wanting this for a Magus, yes? I would almost argue you might do better with re-skinning the Staff Magus Archetype or working with your GM on a Scarf-wielding Magus Archetype. Perhaps a Kensai?
As another alternative, have you explored the possibilities of a Dervish Dancer Bard Archetype from Ultimate Combat? Perhaps talk with your GM about replacing rapier & whip proficiency with bladed scarf proficiency instead of Scimitar & Kukri as the Archetype normally does.

& now I'm having images in my head of a Varisian Dance Mage Sorcerer Archetype to counterpart the Tattoo Mage...

Where are my Bongo's?

Oh yes! I probably didn't mention the idea obviously sprang from the "Kensai blackblade dervish dancing Magus" But I wanted to fit the theme of the campaign, and while a scimitar sword swallowing gyspy is seen quite often, I really liked the bladed scarf. But if the idea does ultimately fall apart I could see reskinning the quarterstaff magus. I'll need to look into it!

As for your Varisian dance mage sorcerer that sounds amazing! I could see some sort of capoeira sorcerer (Or breakdancing xD) flipping around shooting off spells and sparks and such from his/her feet and hands.

Liberty's Edge

Really, it depends. If you're planning to just use the bladed scarf as another person would use the scimitar, then no, it won't be a problem. If you intend to break out the 3.5 spiked chain cheesiness, then it might be a problem.

I might throw some tripping into the equation, but I wouldn't even really get to that line of feats until 7th level or higher. Where fly and (If I remember RotRL correctly) giants come into the equation. I mainly wanted it for being able to use the one hand to use Spell Combat. And have the blackblade be a scarf. Speaking of, is there any reason (other then thematic) that the black blade needs to be a sword?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So, I was able to play through a few campaigns with this magus and I really like him.
Coupling his shocking grasp and twirling around shocking people is quite a bit of fun. Power-wise it isnt too bad assuming that I decide at the beginning of my turn if I'm wielding it one handed or two handed. Plus I get to always have a weapon wrapped around my neck ;)
Otherwise it's great flavor. Anyone else have any suggestions?
