Can I take a trait for a class I don't yet have?

Rules Questions

I'm making a multiclass barbarian/cleric for PFS play. He's starting as a barbarian. Can he take Exalted of the Society as a trait. The trait is legal for PFS play, but it gives Clerics the ability to channel 1 additional time per day.

Thanks.

Don't see why not, though I wouldn't say he could channel until he gets Cleric levels.

If the trait has prerequisites, you need to meet them. If it doesn't, you can take it regardless. It just might not actually affect you yet.

I'd agree that unless it has prereqs you don't meet, you should be able to take it, regardless of whether or not you can benefit from it. However since this is a PFS situation, I would recommend asking over here.

IMO, as a PFS GM, there shouldn't be a problem taking a trait that doesn't have any effect out of the box for you.

Whether it is a trait adding additional Channels, or a trait increasing caster level of a spell, as long as it doesn't require you to be a spellcaster to begin with, you can take it in expectation.

Same thing holds true for one of the traits that reduces the effective level bump of adding metamagic to a specific spell. You can take it for a spell you don't know yet.
