So here's the general question:
What are the ways to make use of the followers granted by the Leadership feat?
And the more specific follow-up:
The situation that I'm in in my current campaign involves the PC's being part of a "rebel" group seeking to aid the proper royal ascension. This makes them outlaws, so anyone who associates with them is thus in danger. So if it's not safe to leave followers in a town and it's not safe to take low-level ("splat"-able) NPC's with you, is it even possible to use them?
My DM allows the players to roll or point-buy follower stats and even give them feats/traits as long as a backstory is created. She even is allowing for PC classes on the followers but I haven't really considered taking advantage of that because I don't want to abuse the feat's power.
So far, here's my list of general possibilities:
* Have followers in different places for lodging/food at a reduced cost
* Have followers with the Cooperate Crafting feat to assist in item creation
** If follower is a l3 adept, they can also have Craft Wondrous Items and make some low-level magical gear
** If follower is a l6 adept, then can have Craft Magic Arms & Armor and produce enchants up to +2
* Gain a follower who has political pull to help PC's talk to nobles
* Use followers for a network of spies
* Have a follower with the Flag-Bearer feat in combat (dangerous)
* Gather a bunch of l1 warrior followers, give them bows, and point at one target (dangerous)
Flavor-wise, the following would be fun:
* a bard who is tracking your adventures to re-tell
* a squire to a logical class (cavalier, fighter, paladin, etc.)
* a Lantern Archon that just follows you around
