Small Size, Speed, and Strength

Advanced Race Guide Playtest

Maybe I'm just special, but was I the only one who assumed that small size, slow(movement 20 ft), and a Str penalty would be linked before checking out the Creation Guide?

It does not need to be... Not all small races should be weak, as well as not all small creatures should be slow (ie Goblins).

I thought that for a long time in 3.x, though eventually there was a small race that had 30 ft. base speed. I can't remember what it was anymore, though. A number of my small races have a 30 ft. base speed as a result of that epiphany.

I even have a small race with +2 to Strength now. :)

i beleive we should remove the ties between size and strength/weapon damage.

the idea that large creatures get massive strength and larger weapon dice by virtue of being bigger is effectively double dipping. add the fact they get reach and now you have triple dipped. factor the enhanced speeds and you have quadruple dipped.

smaller creatures lose strength, thier weapon damage dice drop because of the weapon's size, they tend to lose movement and reach. Quadruple dip here.

it somehow pays too much to be big. i can understand that some large beings are typically stronger. but that should be because of thier lifestyle choices, not thier massive size.

i don't see why progressively smaller weapons should deal less damage. the "smaller" weapons can pierce the armor gap more easily. which should balance out the damage. i'd argue that it should be tiny and smaller creatures that Ignore Damage Reduction, not the hulking brutes. i think we can let the brutes keep thier reach in exchange.

we can change the Ac/Hit Cmb/Cmd Stealth/Perception bonuses to be relative instead. +1 per category for the superior side.
