Character advancement, treasure, and xp. Is this right?

Rules Questions

Looking at the Placing Treasure table on d20pfsrd.com. It looks like the math figures out to about 4 (actually 3.636363636 repeating to be exact) treasure baring encounters total to go from level 2 to level 3. Assuming there are a few non-treasure encounters thrown in there, that means about maybe 7 (on the conservative end) to 12 (on the liberal end) total encounters (depending on the xp distrubution) between level 2 and level 3? Does that sound right?

Scarab Sages

Eh, it kind of depends.

For example, party of four 2nd level characters. Now, you can give them challenges up to apl+3. If you're a cruel dm, then you're looking at 1600 xp, or 400 each.

If you're using the fast track, then you only need 2k xp to level. That would be five encounters.

WBL tells us that each character should net 2k gold or so from level two to three, which means you're looking at 8k in treasure from these five encounters.

Now, table 12-5 says the party should get 800g per encounter, but that leaves us far from our goal of 8k. In fact, it leaves us only halfway there.

So, what does this most extreme of examples tell us? It's possible to follow the encounter charts and not give out enough treasure. Remember, some encounters can have no treasure at all, if you want to build up a nice big treasure chest for the players. Keep an eye out on your party wealth by level, and you should easily be able to parse out enough treasure for it.

XP and treasure are a Classic example of Rules being for the guidance of wise men and the obediance of fools.

Remember that "Challenging, hard, and epic encounters should award treasure one, two, or three levels higher than the PCs' average level, respectively". I use the final encounter CR for that table... when I use it, I prefer to work with big hoards and the WBL table.
