I'm wondering if a griffon wearing Mithral Chainmail barding can still fly. Barding rules say that a flying creature can't fly with medium or heavy armor but the rules for mithral say that mithral medium armor counts as light for purposes of movement.
Also, I was wondering if Griffons have any preferences towards tasks they're asked to do. Would they be upset at mostly being used as a pack animal?
Thanks.

Unless its Elven Chainmail Barding the griffon needs medium armor proficency, otherwise yes there is no reason why the Griffon should not be able to fly in the armor.I'm wondering if a griffon wearing Mithral Chainmail barding can still fly. Griffons are intelligent creatures, you cannot treat them like horses, but they should understand the value of teamwork and different combat roles. Treat your gryphon like a teammate, buy a few horses for it to hunt and eat occasionally and you should have no issues.

My griffons shall feast on the flesh of only the finest of horses!
Thanks for the responses. I don't plan on having my pair of griffons get into a lot of combat. They'll mostly just be used as traveling companions but I want them to have some more protection just in case. We came across a chest that functions like a bag of holding and one griffon will be carrying it and I don't want him to be upset.

You could also cast Ant Haul on it to raise its weight limits.

Just keep an eye on the weight, and you're good to go.
Just wanted to point out that encumbrance does not prevent flying (though it may slow it down).
Also, armor doesn't prevent flying UNLESS it is barding put on a flying mount.
If you are not a mount, or are not wearing barding, then you can fly just fine in armor (albeit, at a slower speed).

A couple thoughts, If you are talking flying transport consider a Pegasus, they are faster and easier to feed.
Also if your main worry is crossbow bolts, arrows and bullets striking your buddy look into quilted cloth armor. The DR ends up being better than an Armor bonus and you can use other items and spells to make that up.

I thought about a Pegasus and several other flying animals and magical beasts. I just have a soft spot for Griffons. Also maintenance shouldn't be too big of an issue in this particular campaign, our party's needs are well taken care of by our employers. So well that I have no idea what to do with my gold. I thought I was buying these griffons but apparently they're gifts. Now I'm looking for stuff to buy for them :)
I'll think about some quilted armor. We have a bunch of wands with hour long buffs so those will work too.
