Grapple

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I tried searching the forums and couldn't really find anything recent to answer some questions.

1. How does it work when Villian A is grappled by PC A, and now PC B wants to attack Villian A?

2. Villian A has grappled PC A, PC B wants to grapple Villian A to remove him from PC A; how would this work out?

3. Some monsters, for example the Wyvern can grapple in the attempt to grab the PC. For it to grab the PC and lift him into the air then drop him how would this work? Does the Wyvern on round one initiate the grapple. Then on round two attempt to pin. Then, assuming all those succeeded (beating the PC's CMD), he can now lift the PC into the air. Or would it take less than three rounds for the Wyvern to get the PC into the air?

And now for a little more to it:

Wyvern is in the air doing a flyby attack, Wizard in party has been casting summon monster; the spell completes. He sets the placement for the summon creatured above the Wyvern. Does the summoned animal, in this case a dire tiger, automatically hit the wyvern? Does he need to make an attack roll to hit the Wyvern? If he hits can he automatically attempt to grapple the Wyvern?

This last scenario happened in my group our last session. We had a minor debate about it, but i'm curious how you all think it should've worked out.

Thanks for the help/input.

1. PC B can simply make an attack against Villain A, Villain A has a -4 penalty to his Dex from the grapple so subtract 2 from his AC for the attack.

2. By RAW the only way I know to help would be to use the Aid Another action to give a +2 bonus to PC A's next attempt to escape or reverse the grapple.

3. One of the things a creature can do once it has maintained a grapple is move up to half it's speed, dragging the grappled creature with it. The Wyvern doesn't need to pin the PC, just maintain the grapple on the round after it establishes the hold.

4. TBH I'd give a major penalty to the tiger's to-hit, as it's essentially falling the moment it comes into being.

check out pg200-201 In the core rule book it has rules for grappling more than one creature

Brotato,

So you're saying that the Wyvern would grapple the first round and if he succeeded, the following round he would roll to maintain the grapple and be able to drag the PC?

Correct, as long as the PC didn't put the Wyvern past its max flying load.

I wouldn't allow a player to summon a creature on top of another creature or in mid-air (except maybe flying creatures). There's a bit in the description about how you have to summon in 'an environment that can support the creature' to justify it. In older rule sets, people would do silly things like summon rhinos fifty feet above their enemies to crush them to death.

You have a good point there and I admit it's something I need to look deeper into.
