Difference between Pathfinder and D&D 3.5?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi all,

I'm looking at Pathfinder after playing D&D 4e and finally deciding that I don't really like 4e. Can anyone give me a quick run down on the main differences between Pathfinder and 3.5? (if any)...?

Cheers!

There is a PDF of the official conversion guide available at the Paizo store for free.

A few sloppy rules like disarm and grapple have be cleaned up. The classes like fighter got upgraded. Fighter get better with weapons and armor as they level, not feats levels benefits.

The Pathfinder game has a more over the top look and feel. It's a tune up, not a total direction change.

Go here to get a look at the rules for free! You miss some of the art and most of the flavor but you get a good look at the rule set.

Hope the link works.

Saph's 3.5/Pathfinder Handbook.

Ninja'ed by the Fish....

Its a solid streamlined version of 3.5 that with minimal effort allows you to use your old 3.5 stuff and at the same time opens up a lot of options for character customisation and variation.

Casters got beefed up a little at low levels, martial characters accross the board. This brings them up to the power level of most prestige classes in 3.5.
Prestige classes are no longer the optimal character design. They are focusing on base classes more. They added archtypes, which replace some base class abilities with other sets of abilities, rather than making a new prestige class for every possible concept.
They made simpler mechanics for grapple/disarm/sunder.
A lot of minor feat/spell/magic item adjustments.
They haven't yet printed as much broken stuff.

Thats a nice guide but little out of date TOZ - some of then new "options" (for want of a neutral word) books change things.

Well, take it up with Saph. :P In the meanwhile, have you got anything more comprehensive?

Nope... like I said its a nice guide but a bit out of date. I thought it was a good idea to add that disclaimer so the OP can take it into account if s/he reads it.

I tend to look at the Pathfinder Core as D&D 3.6

If you add in the Advanced Players Guide, 3.63

If you add in Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat, then 3.65

All of them are basically applying patches to the 3.5 engine. None of which are so radical that they approach a real 3.75 evolution, and in no way at a complete overhaul of the underlying math like 4e.

So what do we call an eventual 2e of Pathfinder that incorporates the changes from UM and UC? D&D 7.3?

Hey thanks very much all, esp that handbook, great guide to what's changed. And I take the point extra books have changed things further.

Cheers !

No problem, Its a great game and I hope it is what you are looking for. It also comes with a good online community with the devs and management from Paizo taking an active part in discussions.
