Useful minor magical items

Advice

I'm not one to pour over the magic item lists and I'm not used to magic being handed out. The army that's contracted our party gives us just about whatever minor magic item we might need like Blast Disks.

My question is what are some useful minor items for a cleric and ranger or items that would be generally useful. All Pathfinder and 3.5 material is allowed.

This thread is a goldmine for smallish useful items.

Thank you, that's a lot of help

Liberty's Edge

Pathfinder Pouch.

A tiny (10lb capacity) bag of holding with it's magical aura concealed, *and* can be converted into a normal pouch (and back) with command word.

AKA, the best greatsword sheath you'll ever find!

Guard: Hand over all your weapons and magical items to enter
Gourry: This is just a fanny pack.
Sometime later...
Monk: Your kung fu is no good!
Gourry: Jihaaaaaad! *draws greatsword from 'fanny pack' while charging*.

Statler "Did he just draw a greatsword from his butt-crack?"

Waldorf "That's one way to split your buns!"

Depends on what the GM considers minor.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Hand of the Mage, Hewards Haversack and the Efficient Quiver myself.

Handy Haversack (Mr Heward's copyright has expired)
Wand of Cure Light Wounds

Definite +1 on this one. Even some very wealthy expert craftsmen dream of saving enough for such rings. They're also the most frequent rings in my experience to have the extra cost applied for combining 2 effects (e.g. a ring of deflection and sustenance). The extra 6 hours a day it gives you is priceless.

You might want to take a look at this line.

Genius Guide : Loot 4 Less : All of the books have meny useful items. They are all under 2,000GP.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

None of these are magic, but that's good because it makes them all cheaper, but every single one is worth having on any character:

1) Net: Don't worry about the proficiency, the -4 is acceptable when you get to make a touch attack. This entangles a foe, hindering movement, preventing 5 foot steps (both tactically very helpful), and creating the entangled condition, which gives a minus 4 to Dex (which means -2 to Ref saves, to hit with ranged weapons, and to AC).

Fold it up after combat, and it can be used again and again. Eventually masterwork is worth it.

2) Tanglefoot bag: Like the Net except only 1 use, but otherwise better. The 20 DC to move isn't a given even against advanced monsters. I've personally used it against creatures well above CR 10 and had them stuck for several rounds. At 50 gp a pop, it's not cheap, but with craft (alchemy) you can get 3 for that price.

3) Smokestick: Like a mini-fog cloud without needing to cast. Cheap too. A great way to gain tactical advantage in certain situations. (For example, if your Cleric is summoning, throw a smokestick in front of him. He now has full concealment vs ranged attacks, can't be charged, can't be targeted by spells, and partial concealment vs melee attacks, yet I'm constantly asked why I think Fog cloud/obscuring mist are good spells :P)

OK, we're past the mundane, now let's discuss the magic (cheap stuff)

1) Cloak of Resistance +1: 1,000 gp for +1 to all saves. That's a serious bargain.

2) Pearl of power level 1: 1,000 gp. These guys aren't a bargain if you increase the level of the pearl, but the level 1 pearls are great to give lasting power for lower level casters. Also the Ranger may get his bang for the buck too.

3) Hat of Disguise: 1,800 gp. A bargain for what it does (which is simply the ability to create illusionary disguises with no limit on uses) gives plus 20 to disguise rolls (which means you don't really need the skill)

4) Handy Haversack: 2,000 gp. I literally get this item for every character at some point. It's like a small bag of holding, but you can retrieve any item as a move action.

5) Slippers of spider climbing: 4,800 gp. These are dipping into expensive territory, but still worth every penny until the day you can replace them with a levitate or fly item. Spider climb can often give the kind of tactical advantage where you can hit them and they can't hit you. If your Ranger is an archer, I recommend these doubly.

Hope that helps.

I know tanglefoot bags are cool.

Trying to make a utility ranged bow monkey.

Can Tanglefoot bags be incorporated into and arrow like smoke sticks can?

I personally like the ring of Feather Falling for 2,200 gp.. Any plate wearing class would benefit from it!

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

At the inexpensive end are:
Ring of Protection +1 - 2,000 gp
Amulet of Natural Armor +1 - 2,0000 gp

Weapon Blanching (all are useful, some become essential) all fairly low cost, usually cheaper than an actual special material weapon or ammo.

Wayfinder - 500 gp
Slightly more expensive (4,000 gp): Clear Spindle Ioun Stone
(same as a Ring of Sustenance, in many ways, can be put in the Wayfinder, but, with optional resonance, gives some of the benefits of Protection from Evil)

More expensive:
Hand of Glory - 8,000 gp
(Extra ring slot = good, but the See Invisibility and Daylight spells once per day each is invaluable)

Never forget the basic potion loadout, if/when you can afford it:
Potion of Invisibility
Potion of Gaseous Form
Potion of Cure Light/Moderate/Serious Wounds
Potion of Flying
Potion of Remove Blindness
Oil of Remove Paralysis
Potion of Remove Curse

Wand of Lesser Restoration - 750 gp

Also depends on what limt "minor" encompasses.

MIC:
Field Ration Kit (food at will, basically) - 2,000 gp (?)
