The Evangelist's Performance

Rules Questions

I've been looking over the Cleric Archetype 'Evangelist', and I'm confused about one of their abilities. Sermonic Performance is 'similar in all respects to bardic performance as used by a bard of the same level', but do they get 4 + charisma performance per day that increases by 2 when they level? Or is it tied somehow to their channel energy?

Thanks!

No relation to channel energy at all, other than the fact that it replaces part of the channel energy ability.

They gain the bardic performance ability and it's round/level progression exactly as a bard. At certain levels you fail to progress your channel energy ability.

I'm shocked that the evangelist hasn't created more of a buzz than it has. The archetype is amazing! With even a mediocre domain the Evangelist can become one of the most powerful buffers in the game. Additionally, bardic music makes them particularly powerful in terms of Summoning. Add to that the Animal domain and things just get silly. :D

Thanks, I don't know how I didn't figure that out myself.

I was going to make a gnome evangelist of Gozreh for PFS, which is why I needed to know. I'm torn between the Animal domain and the Water (Ocean) domain right now. I know the Animal domain with the AC is probably more powerful, but there are just so many cool spells in the water domain, and the Surge power looks like a lot of fun, so I'm torn.

Well, strictly speaking, this is what the domains are going to boil down to:

Animal Domain is really only great for gaining access to an animal companion. The 1st level ability is near useless, and most of the spells are crap. However, two subdomains improve upon this greatly.

Animal - Awful, awful, awful. Never take Animal.

Feather - Swaps speak with animal with a bonus to perception checks and a bonus to initiative when acting in the surprise round. Excellent. Trades hold animal, dominate animal, and antilife shell for feather fall, fly, and mass fly. Hold/dominate animal are nearly worthless, so feather fall (meh) and fly (woohoo!) make great replacements. Antilife shell is remarkably powerful, but it's on the cleric list so you aren't losing it.

Fur - Grants you a boost to your move speed and vision, but uses a swift action to perform. I don't imagine you'll have a lot of swift actions laying around waiting to be used on this character, so this is pretty meh. The spells are mediocre, but they replace essentially worthless ones so it's still a net gain.

Oceans - Surge is an interesting ability, and with the way it's set up you'll find it useful high into your teens. As far as actually being useful, it'll be awesome when you need it and utterly forgotten when you don't (which is to say: often). You'll be trading the ability to cast a spell (standard action) to move an ally/enemy, so it'll be pretty circumstantial. It could be useful in setting up full-round attacks, or shunting baddies into pits and over ledges, but on the whole I'd be very surprised if you used it more than once every third day. The spells are interesting, though- stronger than the animal domain(s) but not particularly good. Spells of note are Obscurring Mist for light cover, slipstream for a conditional boost to movement, a couple of lame-mediocre blasts long after blasting is truly effective, and an incredibly cool 9th level spells, Tsunami.

It's totally up to you, but between those three I'd definitely recommend the Feather domain.

Unfortunately I'd have to switch my deity if I were to pick Feather, as only the Animal domain is open to Gozreh.

I know it's not optimal, but I don't really want to switch my deity at this point. Any tips on his other domains? Maybe there's a gem that I've been missing?

Unless I've seriously misunderstood the rules, worshippers of Gozreth can select Feather as it's the subdomain of Animal, and Animal is definitely one of his domains.

I'm afraid you have misunderstood. The subdomains are specific to certain deities. Erastil grants both Fur and Feather sub-domains, but Gozreh only grants the basic Animal domain.

Well that's super lame, especially considering that Gorzeth is sort of a a sky god. Where can I find a listing of the gods and their domains/subdomains?

The only source I know of is the APG. It's not on the SRD.

Here is Gozreh's page on the pathfinder wiki. You can get a link to any of the god's pages from the Cleric page. Just click on one of the deities, and it will say which domains and subdomains they support. It's also available in the APG.
