Yo! :)
Just a quickie, I don´t really have much time: I´m about to run the RotRL AP (The WHOLE campaign ;P), and is right now converting Burnt Offerings (3.5) to the PF- rules. I´m wondering from you guys who has played that piece with PF- rules which level of the XP- advancement rules u recommend. Fast, Medium or Slow?
Answer as soon as possible, please... :)
/Lambsteak
PS 1: If there is any good conversation guide for RotRL out there, just give me a word... ;)
PS 2: I don´t know if this is the right messageboard category or not, so I may be in the wrong category... ^^´

Flagged this to be moved, it should be under the AP forums for rise of the runelords hereYou'll get the attention of people who are or have run the AP there. Many of which ran it in pathfinder rpg. However you may want to consider waiting on this, since paizo has recently announced that they will be re-releases this AP for PFRPG in Hardcover form early next year.

Thanks for moving it, and yes I´ve seen the hardcover- book too, but our group feels that it´s best for us to play it now... :)
BTW, is this thread going to move or shall I start an identical new one at the right category? :oI am running it now, i had the same question. its roughly around the normal track. i did fast and i had to skip the 2nd book because the party level was high enough to be 1/2 way through book 3 ><
Thanks for the advice, I will keep that in mind... ^^

Assuming you don't add things you should use the fast xp track for two reasons:
1) The CR awards are roughly the same in 3.5 and in PF (sure the party level isn't taken into account any more but still...).
2) The PF fast xp track is roughly the same with 3.5's xp advancement.
Or you could use the info here.
@Sean Terrill
How did this happen?
What level they were at certain key points?

I am running this currently for a group of 6-8 players. I started with the fast XP track but decided to change over to medium as we just finished book 1 and the majority of the party would have been level 5.
I did add quite a few extra encounters in and around town so they we getting XP that was not in the book. My suggestion is that if you are going pretty close to the book just throw XP out the window and level the group when you deem appropriate. It is usually just a lot easier.

...except if you're in a group that like writing numbers down and adding them up and the illusion of incremental progress. If you have one of those groups, just keep a running tally of what XP you've awarded and fudge the rewards so they level when you want them to.
The rule of thumb is if you're not adding anything, the progression fits pretty well with the fast track.
If you want to add side-treks and random encounters and all that, use medium. Personally, I am running almost 3/4 or so of the Kingmaker encounters as well as the entirety of RotR in my game and we're motoring along fine on the medium track. Still, I had to add some extra XP between Skinsaw and HMM to get them close enough to 7th to make it work.

If your players can stomach it, don't level using XP - just level them up when you feel the time is right (typically by doing the CR calculations on your APL). I'm doing RoRL like that right now and it is working out fine. The AP mods offer some hints on what level the party should be at various points in the AP to keep you straight.
EDIT: Like Leo sez above.

Agreed. I'm using that system at the moment, and both my players and me love it. Thing is, I've never liked xp bookkeeping and with the xp cost of magic item creation gone, we don't really need it anymore.
Here are the landmarks I've been using / will use. Comments are welcome.
Level 3 after Catacombs of Wrath
Level 4 after Nualia
Level 5 before entering Misgivings
Level 6 after Misgivings
Level 7 after defeating Ironbriar
Level 8 after the Graul farm
Level 9 after Skull's crossing
Level 10 after Hook mountain
Level 11 when entering Jorgenfist
Level 12 after Mokmurian
Level 13 after Arkrhyst
Level 14 after Runeforge
Level 15 when reaching Xin-Shalast
Level 16 when reaching the Pinnacle
EDIT: Just saw another thread with a variation of that.

I'm running RotRL with 4 PCs, using Pathfinder instead of 3.5, and I've seen several recommendations that the PCs be 3rd level before starting Thistletop. The party got to 2nd level just before Catacombs of Wrath, and are just about to get to Elyrium. So far, they've defeated the first sinspawn, the vargouille, the 2 sinspawn in the prison, and Korovus and 1 of the zombies. That netted them 850 x.p. each, getting them up to 2,150 x.p.
So how exactly are they supposed to get to 3,300 x.p. fighting Elyrium and 1 sinspawn (which will net them 1,800 x.p. total, or 4,50 x.p. each)? Even if they destroy the runewall, it's another 800 x.p., or 200 x.p. each. Should I just give him them an ad hoc bonus to bump them up, or is 4 (inexperienced) 2nd level PCs sufficient to start Thistletop?

If you play by the XP rules, I'd suggest a not-so-random encounter on their way to Thistletop, or simply to let it go. The first few encounters in Thistletop aren't so hard. I chose to grant them their 3rd level before Thistletop for two reasons:
1) I don't like when they get their level in the middle of a dungeon. Personal preference.
2) I wanted to "beef up" the encounter with Gogmurt and his pet, without fear of having them all die in the process.

Yes, my son loves the instant gratification of the x.p. award, so going to periodic level bumps at pre-determined points would be a little disappointing for him. Hmmm, I may throw in the river ambush suggested in the AP if I can tweak it to give them enough x.p. We run shorter sessions, so they would only be likely to get through the Elyrium battle and river ambush in the next session.
