Help with a Monk

Scarab Sages

Alright, so, I was doing some character brainstorming because I finally got a look at the monk stuff in Ultimate Combat, and I came up with a concept for a Monk of the Four Winds/Ki Mystic/Sensei (yes, they stack).

I'm thinking I'll make him Dexterity/Wisdom-based, wielding a two-handed weapon, with enough points in Strength for Power Attack, then focus on the Panther Style feats once I get access to them.

Essentially, the build becomes kind of a Monk/Bard, granting rerolls to allies, Inspire Courage, and all the other awesome benefits of being a monk (I'm also looking forward to a Ki-weapon so I can use Elemental Fist through it). I don't remember exactly what panther style does, but I DO remember it being kind of based on AoO's. This way, losing flurry of blows doesn't hurt as much because I'll be making my attacks through that medium while buffing my allies. I took Combat Reflexes to combine with it, because, why not?

1) Any suggestions as to what weapon to use? Feat Ideas?

2) What exactly do the Panther Style feats do again?

Panther Style has nothing to do with your attacks of opportunities. It has to do with provoking attacks of opportunity and then using Panther Style to counter-attack harder.

I'm confused as to why you're making him Dexterity-based when you plan to use a two-handed weapon.

As for feats, Mobility is a must.

Scarab Sages

Well, the Sensei uses Wisdom for attack roles, and I'm using a two-handed weapon for the bonus Power Attack damage.

Ah, if Panther Style relies on provoking attack opp.'s, Mobility WOULD be really good. /mark down

Have you considered replacing Ki Mystic with Drunken Master? By drinking once a round as a standard action, you can increase your ki by 1 (2 if you have the Deep Drinker feat), and then you have a free ki to spend to increase your AC by 4. Then you can hobble around with Panther Style and take out the mooks.

Scarab Sages

I had considered it, but it really goes against my character concept for RP purposes.

Well for a weapon I’d consider the double-chained kama which will give you reach allowing for more AoO.

Some potentially good feats would include:

Exotic weapon proficiency: double-chained kama
dodge
mobility
combat reflexes
panther style
panther claw
panther parry
power attack
stunning fist
cleave
cleaving finish

Sensi and Monk of the Four Winds both modify Stunning Fist and Abundant Step (among other overlaps) -- so you can't stack these.

"...A character can take more than one archetype and garner additional alternate class features, but none of the alternate class features can replace or alter the same class feature from the core class as another alternate class feature...."

Scarab Sages

Huh. I don't know how I missed that. Oh well, all I was really getting was Elemental Fist anyways >_>

Scarab Sages

Actually just double-checked the PFSRD. If Sensei and Monk of the Four Winds overlap with ability changes, then the PFSRD doesn't show it. According to the PFSRD, Sensei and MotFW don't have ANY overlaps... except for stunning fist. HOWEVER, perusal of the Sensei archetype reveals that this is, in fact a typo, as Sensei doesn't do anything to Stunning Fist at all.

Now, it is entirely possible that the PFSRD just doesn't have the full archetype yet, but then I have far bigger problems than ability overlap >_>

Monk of the Four winds, Monk of the Sacred Mtn, Drunken Monk (or free hand monk) and quinong monk all can be taken at same time.

PFSRD is still rapidly adding material from Ultimate Combat -- the monk section started seeing additions on Monday afternoon (meaning you probably caught is before they had all the "X"s in the boxes).

I'm looking at Ultimate Combat right now, and the Sensei doesn't lose stunning fist or abundant step.

Sensei loses:

-Flurry of Blows
-Fast Movement
-Evasion
-all bonus feats after the first

Monk of Four Winds loses:

-stunning fist
-abundant step
-timeless body
-perfect self

No overlap.

My turn to go WTF? ...now far more Xs in the boxes for Sensei at PFSRD's archetypes spreadsheet than are warranted by the accompanying description when the link is clicked.

<shrug>

Sensei/Monk of the Four Winds/Ki Mystic is still legal. Actually, throw qinggong on there too for barkskin at level 4 at least. Anything to help you avoid attacks of opportunity.

A barbarian/martial-artist tickles my fancy -- at monk5, he's immune to fatigue!

Nope. Pure beat-stick. (Urbans make good Dervish Dancers, btw.)
