Alchemist Clarification- Official Ruling (Spells, Actions, Attack of Opportunity, etc.)

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

I thought I understood the Alchemist until the Ultimate Combat came out.

This got me to question a few things. Now I tried searching the forms and I found a lot of posts but I have yet to see a "Paizo" Employee/Developer give an official word on this information. If I am re-posting, I am sorry and didn't mean to, I couldn't find a strait answer, just discussions on what people thought could be the answer.

Spells/Extracts

Are The Extracts considered a potion or Spell. Here is what I am referencing to.

1. Attack of Opportunity-
A. If its a potion you can't use it in melee because you can't use a potion defensively.
B. If its a spell you can cast defensively.

2. Cast Time's-
A. If its a potion it is "Always" a "Standard Action".
B. If its a spell the spells (Burst of Speed {UC}- Swift Action, Walk Through Space {UC}- Move Action) Their cast time holds according to the spell. Not by one Standard Action to drink.

3. Pulling the Extract Out-
A. If its a potion its a move action to pull out.
B. If its a Spell pulling it out is part of the Standard Action of casting it like a spell component.

4. Do all the rules above apply if the Alchemist uses the Infuse discovery to allow the party to use extracts?

Thank you to anyone who answers this post, my group and I follow the rules to a "T" to be fair to everyone. Thus currently we wont allow the class until we know for sure.

My understanding is that the alchmists "spells" are mixed before hand and used just like potions.

1. Answer A kinda. Drinking a potion always provokes, but the attack of opportunity won't disrupts you from drinking the potion unless they sunder or disarm the potion. So, an alchmist drinking in melee will take the hit, but they will likely still get their "spell" off.

2. Answer A kinda. There is a trait called accelerated drinker that lets you drink potions as a move action.

3. A. There are a lot of groups that house rule that you can quick draw wands and potions. Also, there are some pieces of gear from 3.5 rules that make drawing a potion a free action.

4. Yes. The huge advantage of the infusion discovery is that the alchmist gives an extract to party members, then they drink it on their turn using their action. The alchmist is effectivly the only character that can cast multiple of their "spells" in a single round without metamagic.

Scarab Sages

If you are looking for official answers, you should check the FAQ on the APG page (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/v5748btpy8fo1/faq#tabs) as it does answer a number of frequently asked questions. You should also check the errata as some questions have been 'fixed' in later versions of the books and thus no longer show up on the FAQ page if it was more of an errata issue.

1. Extracts are a standard action to use (draw and consume) that provoke attacks of opportunity but that do not require a concentration check (which means you can't 'cast defensively').

2. The trait accelerated drinker does not let you drink extracts faster anymore.

3. Pulling out and consuming an extract is a standard action. (not like a potion which is a move and a standard)

4. Since the wording on extracts is different since they aren't technically potions, I would have it apply even when handed out as infusions (ie standard action to draw and consume).

The benefit from potions/extracts vs spells is there is no chance of the spell being disrupted... of course if you die because the AoO that is a different matter... :)

Hope that helps

Casting Bomber's Eye is a standard action.

Clarified in APG Errata and updated in the PRD and FAQ: "An alchemist can draw and drink an extract as a standard action."

Potions yes, Extracts no.

Thank you everyone this helps me a lot. I will check the Errata out.
