In GoG, they give new favored class options for goblins. For rogues they get a free rank (not point) to either ride or Stealth.

At first glance I am like how is this different then a free skill point but I looked at the wording and figure it be away to get past the rank equal to or less than level rule.

Now that I am backing up my groups characters on Hero Lab, the software is just treating it as a free skill point (and of course saying I am using too many skill pints into one rank).

So it has me thinking, is my interpation wrong?

Personally, I would interpret this to mean that by putting free ranks in Ride or Stealth, your goblin rogue frees up ranks to put in other skills. I would not allow you to beat the "rank must be equal to or less than character level" rule.

I would completely agree if not for the fact that you can choose to take a skill point for your FC bonus ANYWAY, and thereby making this option moot.

Good question, OP.

My table has considered houseruling it to be an extra 2 skill ranks per rank which must go into Ride and Stealth (1 rank to each per level). More skill ranks than the standard favored class option, but the downside is that they are fixed in what they can do.

That's just granting 2 skill ranks per favoured class bonus. What rogue isn't going to spend 1/level on stealth?

I just think paizo made a mistake here.. it is a useless ability.

Maybe if you give 1/6 a feat that must be spent on skill focus ride, stealth or any of the mounted combat feats it would be cool.

Presumably, the one that isn't is the one that would rather have some extra hit points from his favored class.

Seriously though, another extra skill point for a Rogue is hardly unbalanced, especially if it must go into Ride (which tends to be an uncommon choice for Rogues).

I would have to say that the only ways in which this bonus could be anything but useless (compared to the standard any-rank-you-want bonus) is to either allow you to bypass the ranks/level limit (which could get a bit excessive once you get to, say, level 10 with a base 19 ranks in Stealth before class bonus, dex modifiers and other adjustments) or to allow a bonus rank in both skills and keep the rank/level limit--which does not seem to fit the wording. Definitely a FAQ candidate.

It is indeed an error.

This error has been corrected in the Advanced Race Guide, where goblin rogues gain a +1 bonus on sneak attack damage rolls during a surprise round (see page 115 of Advanced Race Guide).
