Can a concealed creature sneak attack?

Rules Questions

Hello everyone,

I have a enemy creature from the CC AP that can cast darkness on himself therefore gaining concealment or total concealment depending on the light source.

It says the creature uses its ranged poisened throwing axes and tries to sneack attack.

Do I understand it right that, to use a snack attack (roge RAW) the defender has to loose its DEX Bonus to AC (or be flanked).

This leeds to the assumption that when you are attacked by a creature that has concealment or total concealment the defender looses its DEX Bonus. But I can not find that rule anywhere?

It would make sense that if you cant see the attacker its hard for you to react.

Thanks
Markus

Having concealment is not enough, you must also make a stealth roll to determine if the target is aware of your presence.

If the target is not aware of you, you are effectively invisible to that creature.

You might want to check if the creature can see through its own magical darkness. The creature can't sneak attack if its target has concealment from it. Otherwise, it works as Stynkk described.

So a stealth roll against the perception roll of the target?

Does the stealth roll get a bonus from the darkness spell?

its a darkcreeper and has "see in darkness".

I am trying to figure out how to play him. He conceals himself in darkness and will use his ranged - sneak - throwing axe to attack the PCs.

Also, as I am quite a newbie I am thinking how the PCs should then be able to locate & damage him. Glitterdust won't help in darkness either.

Magic missles will also not be possible will they,....

Yep, perception vs stealth. The stealthing creature would not get any bonuses from the darkness.

If any of your PCs have Darkvision, they will be able to see the creeper without problem as it is regular darkness (unlike the deeper darkness spell).

The Glossary section has a whole section about how to locate unseen creatures, you can apply some of them (like groping around) for the darkness situation.

If it is simple darkness, then things that create light will do well in revealing the creature.

Well it says under the darkness spell description that things that create light need to be of a higher spell level than darkness.

The light spell the PCs have is a lower level. They still have the darkvision extract one could use, I wonder if they think about that:-)

It does not matter if the creature knows where the monster is, if he cant see him and the creature can see the person he can sneak attack, as he can not effectively block all his vital areas.
Example, an person with improved invisibility is attacking a player. The player knows what area the attacks are coming from, but he can still be sneak attacked.

thats what I thought in the beginning. But i cant find the rules for that. So no Stealth & Perception tests if the monster can sneak attack during its in darkness (total concealment)
