Dex mod to damage on ranged attacks

Homebrew and House Rules

I am not looking for a feat or class ability to add this.

What i am looking for is if anyone has actually added the Dex mod as damage to all ranged attacks in much the same way as strength is added to melee attacks, and what their experiences with the rule were like.

I have bruited it about for a while, and I am going to try it in my new campaign, and i was looking for others input.

thanks

gunslingers can do it , but only with guns

Ranged-style characters tend to focus on volley attacks to really get their damage up, and the system supports this entirely. As it stands, ranged combat isn't really in much need of assistance when it comes to doing comparable damage. The big trade-off is this: ranged requires a lot of feats to be worthwhile, but you almost always get to full attack; conversely, melee requires few feats to be awesome but often loses its full attack.

If you go this route I'd recommend that the player must have point blank shot and be within the valid range to get the damage. Treat it as precision damage (which it is, technically) to further limit your players' ability to exploit it.

It's still a strong advantage, but it keeps them closer to melee (which is dangerous) and will require more mobility on their part (which puts them more in line with melee characters).

Speaking from my experience with the DRP olympics, I would be very wary as a DM with adding an ability like this.

Archers are actually some of the best damage dealers in the game. The ability to full attack every round is very strong, especially when haste comes into play. Combine that with rapid shot, many shot, deadly aim, point blank shot, and weapon specialization(or smite or favored enemies), and you have a character that is shooting 4 arrows a round every round for 1d8 +15 damage each.

I wanted to introduce such a houserule when I started GMing Pathfinder campaign but the players protested telling me that they used that houserule in their D&D game and it made the ranged weapons dominate the game so completly that it made the game unplayable.

So, I can't say how it works, only rely on their previous experience. However, taking into account that PF seems to have more efficient ranged combat than previous itterations of 3rd edition it could be even more lethal.
