Soooo....
I'm making a lvl 5 Manwitch. No racial weapons.
I'm hexed up quite a bit, I think, and I'm happy with my spells.
The problem I have is a minor one for a witch: I need to find some kind of weapon.
I realize I won't be fighting much. But since I assume my witch didn't spring into this world fully formed, he surely had to wield a weapon at some point.
at the same time, just picking a weapon for flavor seems like a lost opportunity. If I'm going to select a weapon, it should be one that might be useful. Here's what I've got to work with:
Basically 1 weapon proficiency of choice
About 4000-4500 gp to spend on the weapon (ie. magic, baby!)
What do people think? Any advice? Or do you need more information?

I think you'll also need ground beef. Or all this stuff.
...sorry, I have nothing constructive to add...just couldn't pass up the joke...

The only weapon you should ever worry about are caltrops.
If something starts coming for you drop em and run. (best and cheapest way to handle that charge you WILL be subjected to).
Now if you insist on having a weapon take 2, a longspear so you can stay out of the way and a crossbow so you can REALLY STAY OUT OF THE WAY.

Thanks all.
I was thinking crossbow as well. I don't expect to fight at all, and chose spells to help deal with the eventuality that some irredeemably rude fellow gets all up in mah business (ie. Blindness, Bestow Curse, etc) but it's always good to be prepared. I think I'll follow the longspear/crossbow plan.
Thanks!!

My witch uses alchemist fire or acid flasks in hollowed out gourds as her primary non-magic weapon.

Got to think the opposite is true. I'm well known as an optimizer, but when you get into the fine details (like what weapon your witch is going to use), that's the perfect opportunity to flesh out the flavor.

Don't forget the Caltrops.
Nothing like dropping some difficult terrain between you and that raging, Greatsword wielding, fast movement Barbarian charging you.Witch's need every survival advantage they can get. We are way too darn SQUISHY.

I personally favor a cestus as one of my weapons. At low levels any weapon is just a GOTH plan. But having a history of using a cestus, justifies having one a high levels.
Doesn't occupy your hand, wielded all the time. +5 Defending Dueling Cestus = 86000 gp = +5 to ac that stacks with anything, +4 to init that also stacks with anything, and minor combat maneuver bonuses. All without using up a magic item slot or filling your hands...

Longspear is always a good choice 5' reach is a lifesaver. Other than that I would probably go with javelins or a dagger.
EDIT: I do NOT recommend pouring money into your weapon at all.
This. Having a second-string melee person is always handy. Javelins are a good short-range weapon, and...well, you can always eat with the dagger.
